The violin concerto from 1935 is probably the best-known and most frequently performed instrumental work by Alban Berg. Written on behalf of the violinist Louis Krasner, it is his last completed composition. Krasner played the solo part at the world premiere at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona on 19 April 1936 after Berg's death. The concert is dedicated to “The Memory of an Angel.” Berg processed the death of 18-year-old Manon Gropius, who had contracted polio, and his daughter Alma Mahler-Werfel's marriage to architect Walter Gropius. His intention was “to translate the traits of the young girl into musical characters”. With more than 1,200 titles from orchestral and choral literature, chamber music and music theater, Edition Eulenburg is the largest score series in the world. It covers a large part of music history from the baroque to classical modernism and looks back on a long tradition.

The tragic circumstances surrounding the origin of the concerto are well known: Manon Gropius, the daughter of Berg's friend Alma Mahler, died of polio after the composer had written the first sketches to his violin concerto. In remembrance of her, he dedicated the work to the memory of an angel. Later, Berg decided to incorporate into the score the Bach chorale Es ist genug as a quote. He also worked on the solo part directly and intensely with the American violinist Louis Krasner, who had commissioned the work. Berg was no longer able to witness the first performance and the first edition of the concerto since he passed away in late 1935. This new edition is the first Urtext version of Berg's work, which was created in the midst of a spate of epoch-making violin concertos by Stravinsky (1931), Schoenberg (1936), Prokofiev (1937), Bartok (1938), Hindemith (1939) a. o. Errors from the first edition were corrected after an in-depth comparison with the autograph score, the short score and, in some cases, with the twelve-tone row structure. The entire performance material can be purchased; however, due to copyright reasons, the score and orchestral parts are not available the United States.Werden die Urtextausgaben von Breitkopf & Hartel aufgrund ihres hellblauen Umschlags augenzwinkernd die Himmlischen genannt, so ist dies in Bezug auf die neu vorgelegte Partitur Programm. Jorg Widmann treats the violon at first as a vocal instrument, just in the tradition of the great violin concertos of the 19th century through to Alban Berg. But from the cantabile lines, often written 'sul tasto' and 'flautando', emerges again and again a virtuosity which is just as important to the genre and which, based on contemporary playing techniques, causes enticing problems for every player. As the orchestra is reduced to a demanding, yet rather accompanying function during the almost 30 minutes' duration, the piano reduction, already tried in Hamburg by the world premiere performer Christian Tetzlaff with Jorg Widmann on the piano, offers more than ever an opportunity for concert performances off the major stages.2 (2. auch Picc.) * 2 (2. auch Engl. Written early, orchestrated lateThe cycle Seven Early Songs on texts by Lenau, Rilke, Storm and other poets was put together in 1928, more than 20 years after the composition of the individual songs. From the large amount of songs for voice and piano that he had written in his early years, Alban Berg selected seven of them which he then orchestrated. After serious consideration, he laid down a definitive sequence in which the tempo constantly alternates while the orchestral instruments symmetrically recede before picking up again. Once the piano and orchestral editions were printed, the Seven Early Songs quickly conquered concert halls in both scorings. They are still at home on the concert stages of the world today which is reason enough to present this work by Alban Berg in an Urtext edition following the Violin Concerto. The orchestral material can now be purchased for the first time.Awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2016.

Chorale (2001-02), for orchestra, is a kind of musical meditation on the chorale Es ist genug from Bach's cantata O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort, itself a harmonisation of J R Ahle's 1662 hymn. Nick Kimberley's preface outlines the context of the Bach original and refers to Alban Berg's use of the chorale in his Violin Concerto almost 300 years later. In contrast to both of these works, Lindberg's Chorale has no extra-musical agenda. The composer explains that he took the harmonic structure of the chorale and embedded it in his own harmonies. “I make an analogy with the rise and fall of the tide. When the tide is in, the sea-bed is invisible; but when the tide goes out, you see the rock formation on the sea-bed.” Tribute is a short show-piece for full orchestra composed in 2004 as a gift to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Esa-Pekka Salonen's debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
