Although Ferdinand David is mostly known as a composer for a couple of his instrumental works, namely a Concertino for Trombone, and this Concertino, Op. 12 for bassoon, perhaps he should be most well-known as the violinist who premiered the Violin Concerto of Felix Mendelssohn in 1845. He was appointed as concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig when Mendelssohn, a childhood friend, became the principal conductor in 1835. This Concertino for bassoon also exists in a version for viola, and now subsequently this edition for bass clarinet. It is a fun solo in two parts, first an aria-like melody, followed by a technical 'Presto agitato.' The key has been kept the same asthe original version, and although it is preferred to perform with an extended range instrument, indications are made for adapting it to a standard range bass clarinet. Cecile Chaminade's Concertino For Flute And Piano provides quite a workout for the flutist with its wide-ranging highly decorative solo part. A broad and graceful melody opens the work. After a more active central section marked Più animato agitato in the score a short oboe phrase leads into a cadenza for the soloist. A reprise of the opening melody and a rousing coda conclude this melodic and attractive work.

to the violin concerto by Gyorgy Ligeti. Par ADES THOMAS. In a conversation with the violinist Peter Herresthal, we touched on the “invitation” in the score of Ligeti’s Violin concerto to provide a cadenza for the work. Peter suggested that I answer this invitation and I was happy to accept. I followed all the composer’s directions exactly: the cadenza may use material from all five movements, and should be of “hectic” character throughout. I also aimed to write a cadenza of which the closing orchestral coda would be an inevitable result. (Thomas Adès) The cadenza can also be composed by the soloist and can last up to 1-2 minutes. It should be hectic throughout (continuation of the appassionata agitato molto), but can incorporate melodic material ad lib. from all five movements. Towards the end, the tempo should be prestissimo with alternating arco and left hand pizz. in mad virtuosity. The cadenza has no real end and is suddenly interrupted by the orchestra at R (as agreed between soloist and conductor). This interruption occurs suddenly 'as if unprepared'. The soloist should at this point be playing in high positions (on the top string) at maximum velocity. The solo violin abruptly falls silent on the entry of the high woodblock. Roma wird von einem sehr pastoral anmutenden Andante eröffnet, welches - zusammen mit einem Allegro Agitato - den ersten Satz von Bizets Komposition bildet. Pour Quator á Cordes-Born in 1947 Laurent Duvillier-Wable trained under pianist Suzanne Joly and studied composition with Michel Puig. The latter a student of Ren? Leibowitz introduced him to the mysteries of Sch?nberg and Webern's twelve-note composition. To create a coherent œuvre Duvillier-Wable drew on the array of possibilities offered by chamber music in his series of six Sonatas composed between 1992 and 2007. Sonata IV For String Quartet was written in 1994 the year his father – painter Ren? Duvillier a friend of Charles Estienne and Andr? Breton – fell gravely ill. Divided into four movements thecomposition contains two beautifully expressive musical references: the Lamento religioso refers to Bach's Passion according to Saint Matthew by quoting the choral 'Was ist die Ursache aller solcher Plagen' (No.19: What is the cause of all this suffering?) when Jesus distressed by his imminent agony asks his disciples to watch over him. The Agitato final borrows the inexorable 'Must it be? It must!' theme from Beethoven's Quartet No.16 in F that crowns this poignant work.
