Despite his young age (born in 1991), the Russian pianist Vyacheslav Gryaznov has already written quite an impressive number of transcriptions for piano solo or chamber music ensembles, among them many arrangements of chamber music and orchestral works by Russian composers like Borodin, Tchaikovsky or Rakhmaninov. However, Gryaznov also studies intensively the music from J. S. Friday a.m. For solo piano. This expansive miniature was written in 1981 in response from the composer to the emotional impact of listening to the Adagietto from Mahler?s 5th Symphony. Indeed, the main melody of my piece follows the melodic line of Mahler?s, but takes off in a different direction and ?gradually metamorphosises into a lighter style reminiscent of a jazz improvisation? as though we move from the philharmonic hall in Central Europe to a Manhattan jazz club around 2am, when everything is subdued and transient? (McLachlan).
