Ice storms are a frequent occurrence in the American
south. They are beautiful beyond description—the
whole world encased in crystal, trees coated with a
glistening layer of ice, a brilliantly glittering
landscape in the morning sun. Unforgettable memories
from long ago provide this musical imagery.
Unfortunately, ice storms are very destructive, second
only to tornadoes. Trees cannot support this sort of
beauty, and large limbs are continually falling on cars
and powerlines.
another thought: the brittleness (is that a word) of ice crystals certainly comes through in this ice cutting song. There is something at once charming with the high octaves...and alarming with the cut crystal sound you have created not only in that register, but also in the open 4th and 5ths. I think you have keenly captured the essence of your own literary description. Nicely done.
You've really got those crystals down. All seems so delicate, but, as you say, very destructive and dangerous. Your piano score sparkles from the from the first rolled chord to the end. Very nice.
