LYRICS La mattina del cinque di agosto
si muovevano le truppe italiane
per Gorizia e le terre lontane,
e dolente ognun si partì.
Sotto l'acqua che cadeva a rovesci
grandinavano le palle nemiche;
e per fiumi, per monti e per valli
si moriva cantando così:
O Gorizia, tu sei maledetta
per ogni cuore che sente coscienza,
dolorosa ci fu la partenza
e il ritorno per molti non fu.
O vigliacchi, voi che restate
con le donne sui letti di lana,
predatori di noi carne umana,
questa guerra c’insegni a punir!
Voi chiamate campo d'onore
questa terra di là dai confini,
ma qui si muore gridando: assassini,
maledetti sarete un dì!
(In the morning of August the fifth, moved the italian troops towards Gorizia and other distant lands, and everybody left home sad.
Under the rain which fell in torrents, the enemy bullets hailed, and along rivers, mountains and valleys, people died singing so:
Oh Gorizia, every conscious heart swears at you; the leaving was painful for us, and for many there was no return.
Oh cowards, you who stay with your women in woolen beds, predators of our human flesh, may this war teach us to punish you!
You named this land beyond the borders as a field of honor, but we die crying: murderers, you shall be cursed some day or other!)
