Biography:Prof. Stefan Stuligrosz, born in Poznan in 1920, for many years the source of the artistic success of the "Poznañ Nightingales" Boys' and Men's Choir. He started his work with the Choir in 1939. After the arrest of Father Waclaw Gieburowski by the Germans, the conductor of the Cathedral Choir, Stefan Stuligrosz with 24 persons originated a choir. After the II World War Stefan Stuligrosz organized an 80-member boys' and men's choir whose performance at the Warsaw National Philharmonic in 1949 was the first remarkable success in Poland. In 1950 the Choir was merged into the Poznañ State Philharmonic, which meant better development prospects. At the same time in the years 1946-1953 Stefan Stuligrosz studied musicology at the Poznañ University simultaneously studying symphonic conducting and solo singing at the Poznañ Higher School of Music.
The Diretor For 30 years up to his retirement Stefan Stuligrosz taught at the Poznañ Music Academy. In the years 1967-1989 he was the Head of the Academy. He educated many well-known conductors. Stefan Stuligrosz was awarded for his artistic and educational merits many times. He has been the only winner of the I-Grade State Award 'for achievements in the area of choral singing' (1976). In 1989 Stefan Stuligrosz celebrated the 50th anniversary of his artistic activity. On this occasion he received congratulation from all over the world, especially from the United States President George Bush, and Pope John Paul II who awarded him with the Great Cross of St.Silvester, the Pope.
