Thomas Tallis (30 janvier 1505 - 23 novembre 1585) était un compositeur et organiste anglais.
Organiste de l'abbaye de Waltham dans l'Essex aux alentours de 1536 jusqu'à la dissolution de l'abbaye en 1540, Tallis est nommé gentilhomme de la Chapelle royale en 1542. Il compose alors et tient l'orgue pour Henry VIII, Édouard VI, Marie Tudor, et Élisabeth Ire. Il demeura un catholique convaincu toute son existence.
Il partage sa position à la Chapelle royale avec son disciple William Byrd. En 1575 les deux hommes se voient conférer conjointement le privilège exclusif pendant vingt-et-un ans d'importer, imprimer, publier, vendre de la musique et d'imprimer du papier musique. Tallis participe à la publication en 1575 du premier livre des Cantiones Sacrae de Byrd, pour lequel il compose 16 des 36 pièces.
Son œuvre prolifique compte notamment de nombreuses messes et motets. Son œuvre la plus réputée est probablement Spem In Alium, un splendide motet pour quarante voix indépendantes. Ce tour de force contrapuntique est pratiquement unique dans la littérature musicale - un motet à quarante voix du compositeur florentin Alessandro Striggio, datant approximativement de la même époque, peut avoir inspiré Tallis. Seems a pity not to finish off
the good work you've started.
Also I'm not sure about the
barring at the beginning,
which seems to go against the
word-stress.

Some errors to watch however:
the tenor words in bars 29,30
are incorrect. A canonical
wording: -ev-(2 minims) -er,-
-that- -he- -may- -bide-
-with- -you- -for-....

easy to follow all parts and
true to my old copy but more
professional and less marked.
I tried to buy a digital copy
but there were none available.
This is a godsend as I am
singing it tomorrow.

négligeable. Offre une couleur
renaissance à son propre
répertoire. Personnellement,
ce morceau va m'être utile
pour accompagner des
sépultures à l'orgue par ex.
