The music is quiet as can be it the surface of a lake. The reference to the aquatic element comes to me rather naturally, the idea of ether and smokes also. It is in any case a music which stimulates the picture! The harmony is there complex, accentuated by this imperturbable counterpoint. The image of François-Xavier about the swan is excellent. I agree too for the reference to Gustav Mahler, I also think instinctively of Chostakovich who besides Admirer of Mahler and of his "Das Lied von der Erde" was tall.
