The Magnificat (My soul magnifies) is a canticle
frequently sung (or spoken) liturgically in Christian
church services. It is one of the eight most ancient
Christian hymns and perhaps the earliest Marian hymn.
Its name comes from the first word of the Latin version
of the canticle's text.
The Nunc dimittis is a canticle from a text in the
second chapter of Luke named after its first words in
Latin, meaning 'Now you dismiss...'. (Luke 2:29–32),
often used as the final song in a religi...(+)

These canticles take the place of a fourth psalm at
Lauds. From the New Testament the Breviary takes the
following: At Vespers, the "Canticle of the Bl. Mary
Virgin" (Luke 1:46-55), commonly known as the
"Magnificat" (from its first word). At Compline, the
"Canticle of Simeon" (Luke 2:29-32), commonly referred
to as the "Nunc dimittis" (from the opening words).
George Day (1694-1713) was the organist of Wimborne
Minster, Dorset, UK, 1694 - 1713. His burial is
recorded on April 8th. He penned these Evening
Canticles, evidenced by a manuscript organ book
(Wimborne Minster chained library), one Alto part book
, two Tenor part books and two Bass part books.
Although originally written for Chorus (SATB), I
created this arrangement for Woodwind Quartet (Flute,
Oboe, Bb Clarinet and Bassoon).
