Tarrega was born in Villareal, in the province of
Castellón, Spain. His father played the guitar, and
was skilled in the Spanish style called flamenco.
Tarrega became partially blind after becoming sick with
an infection. He later had guitar lessons with Julián
Arcas, his father also insisted that he learn the
piano. At the age of 22 Tarrega entered into the music
conservatory in Madrid, under the sponsorship of a
wealthy merchant. He was well instructed in the theory
of music, harmony, and composition.
