Every great thinker and innovator, no matter the depth and breadth of his work, has moments of reflection on the business of living. Although the level of commitment required to take an insight from an “ah-ha!” moment to a fully realized groundbreaking concept is high (some would say, even life-consuming), even in the midst of such an endeavor, there is time to think on the small (and not so small) aspects of what it means to be human, what it means to get along in the world.Edwin E. Gordon is perhaps the world’s principal thinker and researcher in music education. But, as with other great thinkers, Gordon has had many moments of reflection on the business of living. In Whittled Wordscapes, he shares his thoughts on a wide variety of topics, from Money, Athletics, and the Arts, to Mazeltov, from What Is Intelligence? To Yellow Pads and Computers. In this collection of 54 brief essays Gordon shares thoughts and insights that are inspiring, challenging, and always thought-provoking.Whittle d Wordscapes is a rare glimpse of a great thinker’s mind as he considers what makes the world tick. As you read, you will discover your own “ah-ha!” moments, and will find yourself pondering what Gordon says long after putting down this fascinating book.

In creating the African American ecumenical hymnal, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism it was imperative to the core committee that the hymnal serve as a needed resource for the many denominations in the African American Church. It was the committee’s strong desire that this hymnal would represent and preserve the rich theological, cultural, and musical heritages of these traditions and offer a full breadth of music representing historical as well as vibrant contemporary worship, while looking toward the future. It was also of utmost importance that this hymnal draw the body of Christ together so that it may be enlarged, enriched, and inspired to live and worship based on what unites us: “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” This hymnal contains selections of diverse styles and genres, including traditional ecumenical hymns, contemporary texts written for the twenty-first-century church, praise and worship selections, music from Taizé, choral responses, responsorial psalmody, traditional and contemporary gospel music, and Negro spirituals. The editors maintained a remarkably high degree of excellence in selecting and presenting this repertoire, and church musicians of all tastes could find this anthology useful either as a reference or as a repository for imaginitive congregational song. Bach's Reformation cantata, based on what is probably Martin Luther's most famous hymn, evolved over a period of several years. At the beginning was a Weimar cantata for Oculi Sunday 1716, now missing, which was based on the hymn with an instrumental quotation in the opening aria and with the final chorale. In the Leipzig years around 1730, Bach wrote a cantata for Reformation Day using this material. It began with the first verses of Luther's hymn in a simple four-part setting and also included the other verses. Later on, in the 1730s or 1740s, Bach replaced the introductory chorale movement with a chorale setting which was unique, spacious and motet-like in its style; this - uniquely in this respect - incorporated the choral writing in an instrumental canon for oboes and organ continuo. The powerful opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias which reflect the full breadth of Bach's art of word painting and emotion. One of Bach's most magnificent cantatas, one of the greatest works in the history of music. In addition to the complete performance material the arrangements of movements 1 and 5 (with 3 trumpets, timpani as playing score) by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach are available (Carus 3108089). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3108000.

Virtually every country blues recording made prior to World War II that has been recovered by the collectors is commercially available. No one could have anticipated how much of the recorded legacy of country blues would become available to be heard. It really is a treasure trove of musical history, and in listening to the incredible breadth and variety in the country blues that this re-issuing movement has made possible, I stand in awe of the magnitude and scope of what the people who played in this style expressed in their music. There really is something for everyone in this music, whether you like your blues smooth and sophisticated or down and dirty. - John Miller. Includes access to online audio.
