The melody of this Christmas carol comes originally from a Finnish songbook of 1582, containing a collection of 74 medieval songs together with Latin texts. The version arranged by Gustav Holst became very popular in the British Isles - with a text that links it to December 28, the Day of the Holy Innocents. Philip Sparke based his adaptation on Holst’s powerful arrangement and has added various musical material himself.

Erik Routley in The English Carol describes the fifteenth century Coventry Carol asperhaps the simplest and most beautiful of all the lullaby carols. Carlton Young retains these qualities in an expressive and poignant setting for SSA voices and handbells appropriate for Christmas, Epiphany, and Holy Innocents (Matthew 2:13-18). Johann Michael Haydn's oeuvre includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three descants, composed for his dear choirboys of the Salzburg 'Kapellhaus'. The first setting of the ordinary in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777. It was initially intended for the Commemoration of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, when the chapel boys celebrated their principal feast day. This exceptionally charming mass, characterized by a wonderfully effervescent joyfulness, is an insider's tip for anyone looking for new repertoire for three-part women's, girls' or boys' choir. By virtue of ist scoring, the mass is also eminently suitable for small-scale performances. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5425700.
