Composer's Notes: The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called “fractals”. These formulas, used in the fast growing field of “Chaos theory”, are relatively simple, but they generate fascinating and surprisingly “organic” patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen, or played as music. One should think that such a mathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of Stonewave, however, is not one you would associate with math books. The steady, insistent pulse, and the use of sequences put squarely up against each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then, let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name of Liberalism, making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa. Stonewave is therefore an incantation, as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaims the Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. This dynamic and intense work describes a phenomenon in which clouds follow the same pattern as waves in the ocean. After an introspective opening, the music grows in intensity with long sustained chords pushing through intense rhythmic movement. Eventually, woodwinds become the focus of the work in a subdued section before undulating percussion begin the final powerful drive. Woodwinds join in a flurry of activity while brass players sustain epic chords once more, until a whirlwind of notes converge into one chaotic statement, punctuated by dissonant chords in the brass. The final sequence will leave the audience gasping. Intense!

Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.

De première vond plaats tijdens het jubileumconcert op 8 november van datjaar. Het werk, dat is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm, begint met een korte introductie die het hoofdthema inleidt, dat aanvankelijk wordt gespeeld door het koper en dan wordt herhaald met een weelderige discant in hethout. Het thema wordt voortgezet en gaat over in een tweede thema, eerst tutti gespeeld en rustig herhaald door fagot, tenorsax en eufonium.
