Composer and organist, Joseph Bonnet (1884-1944) is considered one of the most major French pipe organ players. It is no surprise, therefore, that his Concert Variations for Organ are very well informed. Following his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bonnet took over as concert organist at the institution. Concert Variations for Organ was compiled in 1906, soon after his graduation. The work begins with a helpful index of the organ registrations and performance directions. Concert Variations begins with a virtuosic, cadenza-like theme in E minor. Following this, four variations are heard, all containing contrast in organ sound, tonality and exploited melody and rhythm. For all advanced, aspiring organists, Bonnet's Concert Variations is an essential addition to the repertoire.

Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming the organist at the church of Saint-Godard in Rouen. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D Major, published in 1927. Toccata in D Major is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupre. The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a toccata for organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.

,,Bach spielen auf der Orgel (Playing Bach on the Organ) - the eagerly anticipated and logical addition to the new ten-volume edition of Bach's organ works - addresses organists of various skills and interests. It is not a scientific textbook focusing on a comprehensive presentation of the sources; it rather aims to make the fascinating cosmos of Bach's organ compositions accessible and ignite the passion, which is essential for an inspired interpretation. In his capacity as both a concert organist and a Bach researcher, Jean-Claude Zehnder is, like no other, apt to give the reader an understanding of the diverse aspects of playing Bach in a scientifically founded and yet vivid and exciting way. From Bach's organs and questions with regard to the registration practice of his time, via performance-technical aspects to thoughts on text reference, proportions and symbolism, no important subject has been left out. Questions of interpretation are discussed by reference to selected works and round off the compact presentation. A bibliography allows further own research.

“Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, Mass of Pentecost is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Composed in 1949-1950, the Organ Mass is thought to be based on twenty years of improvising at Saint Trinity Church in Paris where Messiaen was organist. Mass of Pentecost is in five movements; 1) Entrance, 2) Offertory, 3) Consecration, 4) Communion, and 5) Recessional. Influences of birdsong are depicted within the piece, reflecting the composer's interest in ornithology. The first movement also contains the use of Greek rhythms. Mass of Pentecost is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.”.

“Born in 1955, Lebanese-French composer, organist and improviser Naji Hakim studied under Jean Langlais at the Paris Conservatoire before succeeding Olivier Messiaen as organist of the Saint Trinity Church in Paris. Considering his significant musical training, Langlais' compositions are created from a wealth of knowledge and understanding, Concerto for Violin being no exception. Composed in 2002, Concerto for Violin, with String Orchestra or Piano reduction accompaniment, is highly modern in composition. With a typical performance lasting about 35 minutes, the concerto is made up of three movements. The solo Violin line addresses many virtuosic techniques, including double and triple stops, articulation, complex rhythms, varying bowings and a huge range of performance directions, amongst other aspects. For all advanced violinists, seeking varied, modern repertoire, Hakim's Concerto for Violin is an essential addition to the repertoire.&rdquo.
