Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

Four Traditional Songs is a setting of four heartbreaking and poignant folk songs by virtuoso contemporary composer Nico Muhly . Composed in 2011, the songs deal with themes of death, murder and unimaginable events that are emotively arranged for Countertenor Voice and Piano. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London, this work was first performed at those renowned venues in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Muhly states that he drew inspiration from old English folksongs, and would spend time imagining stylised yet subtle musical settings with accompaniments. The result of this intensive period of listening is Four Traditional Songs , whichlasts around 15 minutes and carries that incredible sense of sad balladry that counters the occasionally jaunty melodies. This edition is for Countertenor Voice. Please click here to purchase the Baritone version.

Musi c for unaccompanied choir features very little in the works of the violin virtuoso and composer Louis Spohr (1784-1859), although he used the chorus to great effect, particularly in his early Romantic operas. Now, Clytus Gottwald has transcribed three of Spohr's songs with piano accompaniment for five-part mixed choir. The texts are by Goethe, Amalia Schoppe, and Uhland. Spohr's music, stylistically typical of a period of musical transition with its indefinable qualities, offers in a special way starting points for Gottwald's technique of arranging, influenced as it is by contemporary music. Gottwald's transcriptions of songs and instrumental works for vocal ensemble, distinguished by their highly sophisticated sound, have become firmly established in choral repertoire throughout the world in recent years.

'Caracolitos chicos from Alberto Grau (*1937) ist a virtuoso composition for women's choir belonging to a group of works that Grau wrote for ensembles who were looking for new aesthetic proposals. The text of Garcia Lorca that serves as a point of departure, is only a short selection of playful verses describing the natural and untamed character of a child that imitates a horse. This is why the composition combines different layers of polyrythmic textures in the singing parts of the choir with body percussion, which are fully interconnected and must be interpreted as a whole. The intention of the composer is that the piece turns into a festive and happier experience on stage.

This work in four movements is musically demanding and interesting for the pianist, though not as technically challenging as the composer's highly complex 'Eight Studies' (2 vols., ED 7068 and ED 7069). It is an example of the moderate French contemporary style. These four short movements are kept in a comparatively modern idiom and hence should appeal to a wider audience and entertain even the 'non-virtuoso'.
