If you look at the first bars of Ansgar Krauses arrangement (and transposition to E-minor) of the E-flat minor Prelude from Bachs Well-Tempered Clavier I and forget the famous original for a moment, you might think that the piece was originally written for guitar. Equally idiomatic are the arrangements of the other preludes in this collection, which Ansgar Krause has hand-tailored to his instrument. They stem chiefly either from the Well-Tempered Clavier or the Six Little Preludes BWV 933-938.

Busoni's Bach Advanced SchoolIn October 1909, Breitkopf & Hartel succeeded in winning Ferruccio Busoni for the edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's piano works. Busoni had studied the music of Bach more intensively than almost any other artist of his time had. As a pianist, arranger, theorist and pedagogue, Busoni was instrumental in bringing Bach out of the 19th century and into the 20th century. That same year, Busoni and two collaborators, Bruno Mugellini and Egon Petri, began work on the instructive edition, which was to comprise 25 volumes. The first volumes were published in the spring of 1916, and in May 1923, the Bach Advanced School project was finally completed. This also marked the end of Busoni's thirty-year-long creative involvement with Bach's works, the impact of which still reaches far beyond the Bach-Busoni formula. All alterations and additions pursue the educational intent of affording the student insight into the mechanism of the composition. Moreover, they illustrate and supplement the views presented only in a sketchy manner in the introductions. In several cases, it takes the sum of the comments on the various pieces to constitute the all-encompassing opinion on one and the same question. (Ferruccio Busoni).

Johann Sebastian Bach??s arrangements of the ??69 Sacred Songs? from the Musical Hymnal by Georg Christian Schemelli (Leipzig, 1736) have long been part of the German language vocal concert repertoire and a mainstay in vocal pedagogy. Originally, only these 69 of the 954 hymns in the collection were published with a single bass line as the accompaniment. Bach??s contribution was to specify harmonies to be played over those same bass lines by adding figured bass numbers and symbols beneath each note.
A figured bass line can easily be turned into a relatively simple guitar accompaniment or a more elaborate setting, offering a range of possibilities that make working with this music both interesting and rewarding for the guitarist. While other period and modern editions of the ??69 Sacred Songs? offer accompaniments for keyboard instruments, this Mel Bay publication features intermediate to advanced transcriptions exclusively for the guitar.
Best suited to college-level players or advanced aficionados, this special Mel Bay Publications edition includes the vocal line with German lyrics and the guitar accompaniment transcribed from Bach??s figured bass lines. Written in guitar-friendly keys, 29 of the transcriptions employ a capo to achieve the original key designed for high voices. Without the capo, these same arrangements would be suitable to be sung by lower voices. The remaining 40 hymns are in their original guitar-friendly keys and so do not require a capo.
This volume contains accompaniment settings of all 69 of the sacred songs and arias for which Bach wrote figured bass annotation. For performance variety and convenience, this book includes ??Scores in their Original Keys,? and stand-alone ??Guitar Accompaniment,? and ??Bass Parts.

Per Norgard BACH TO THE FUTUREFor many years I have been specially fascinated by three of the preludes of Bach's Well-tempered Piano, and I wish with this concerto-version for percussion-duo and orchestra to highlight some of the structural aspects of these pieces: It is my belief that there is a tradition in the music history, that makes it possible to let certain germs in an earlier period unfold into new, but not heterogenious, dimensions of a perhaps several hundred years later phase of the tradition. This concerto is a result of several years collaboration with Uffe Savery and Morten Friis (Safri-Duo), as well in original compositions - (Resonances, Repercussion, Resume in EchoZone I-III) as in arrangements of the 3 Bach preludes, preparing for the enormous stylistic challenges of this work.A few introductory comments to each movement:I Movement: The archetypal sequence of broken chords within C-major has established itself as almost a cultural code, allowing the composer of 1996 to tell his tale-in-tones only by stressing and colouring the tones in the original piece without changing the pitches or (relative) durations as a 'palimpsest' containing as well the old as the new musical tale simultaneously. Later in the movement, this singleline is multiplied by the, till then discrete, but permanently pervading, proportion - throughout the piece - very close to the 'Golden Section'(= 3:5:8.t.i:8 before repetition, 5 before starting anew from the deepest tone, 3 as the rest etc. unchanged). The 3 tonal levels as well as the 3 relative speeds are treated according to these proportions for certain passages, but even in those the main focal point is directed at the freely invented melody (by me) incarnating itself solely by the unpermutad sequels of the original prelude.II Movement: One feature of the F sharp-prelude pervades all the six minutes-long second movement: A 4 times identical rhythmic pattern = 6:4:3:2:3:4:6 - as an hourglass-shaped timeshape - inspired me by the closeness of this pattern to a shape within the infinity-drumming of my invention, called Wide-Fan and Narrow-Fan , referring to pattern consisting of 8:4:2:1:2:4:8, the familiarity with the above - quoted one being obvious. New and old elaborations of this pattern-pair permeates the movement, especially since the Safri-Duo by their performance of my Repercussion had augmented my appetite for including this idiom in a wider context:III Movement: Without the existence of the d-minor-prelude I doubt that I would have dared to write a work like this, since it is the inexhaustible, rare quality and pecularity of this piece, which has stimulated my feeling of wonder and 'modernity' (or: eternity!) of this piece, of which I know of no equal in its special respect: the perpetual ambiguity of melodic foothold in the rhythmic ostinato of a broken descending triad, co.

For many choral singers Jesu, meine Freude is not just a motet by Bach, but the motet par excellence. Bach's motets as a whole have to be described as exceptional works, but even amongst these this is an exceptional work which is out of the ordinary not only in terms of its length. The formal conception, with its alternating chorale and Bible verses in 11 sections in a symmetrical structure, is also unique. The motet was very probably composed for a funeral, but no further details about this are known. By comparison, there are clear indications that the motet, as we now know it, was probably not composed in one go, but was composed over a long period of time. Score available separately - see item CA.3122700.

The now-published volumes 9 and 10 have presented a special challenge, for particularly in the field of the chorale arrangements the transmissions are more complex than in any other group of works. This ties in with the crucial question of Bach's authorship, which has been the subject of much controversy in the past. There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. More on this in the volumes' text sections. The situation of the chorale partitas is not quite so dramatic, whereby these holdings also had to be subdivided for reasons of transmission into main section, appendix, and online presentation. The so called ,,Neumeister-Chorale are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because the compilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ,,Neumeister-Sammlung should facilitate the attribution. Those works requiring further research, besides of some versions, are presented online, since their profile reveals less evidence of the true author. Breitkopf has given the world a splendid edition of the organ works of Bach. These final two volumes offer a wealth of chorale-based music benefiting from the very latest research. Aside from the edition's obvious scholarly merit, a practicing church organist will love the convenience and variety of these volumes. Recommended without hesitation.(Jonathan B. Hall, The American Organist).

The pieces contained in the present volume provide a link between the easy, dance-like movements contained in the Anna Magdalena Bach Book and the two-part inventions. The text corresponds very largely to that of the original source; missing dynamic and tempo markings must be supplied by the player himself in accordance with the character of each piece. The training of the student's feeling for style must begin here, his technical capabilities being taken into account. The occasionally simplified ornaments can also be treated in this manner. The fingerings are intended as suggestions for small hands; they must, of course, be adapted to the particular player's hands, taking tempo and phrasing into consideration. The editor has attempted to solve the problems of phrasing and articulation by means of his own suggestions, but without cluttering the text too much. Various alternative solutions (as indicated in no. 3) are possible, and should - insofar as they make musical sense- be realized in practice. By independently choosing a phrasing and writing it into the music himself, the student improves his unterstanding of the polyphonic structure and the form. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1977.

Bicinia - unaccompanied duos - have been known to us from the fifteenth century onwards. So quite early on it was customary tu practise this type of musical exercise, which later, especially during the Romantic period, achieved great popularity as the duo or duett. Equal numbers of this sort of instrumental duo were composed for nearly all wind and string instruments. On the other hand, only a small amount of compositions for two trumpets have come down to us. In order to play any music which progresses beyond pure fanfare on a natural (valueless) trumpet, it is necessary to make use of the clarion register (the top third of the natural harmonic). And if such a melody is to be accompanied by a second part, only the few natural notes lying below it are left, or else this high register itself, which calls for great virtuosity on the part of the trumpeter. As well as this, we must remember the fact that trumpet-playing was only allowed for the trumpeters of a royal court, army, staff, or for the field-trumpeter of a prince, plus a few council, city, and church musicians, who were bound by strict guild and corporation rules. Thus in spite of the preference for its festive sound, the spread and handing down of trumpet music was almost reduced to nothing under these circumstances. As well as this, pride of place and profession rivalry and envy amongst musicians contributed in large part. In England the situation was somewhat freer. Here pretty little trumpet duos originated, including, amongst others, those written by Handel for his master-trumpeter Valentin Snow and the Royal Sergeant-trumpeters of the Shore family. An especially happy exception was the diocese of Olmiitz. Here there was a capable group of musicians of the chapel royal with the brilliantly talented group of trumpeters and the field-trumpeter Pavel Vajvanovsky, who also composed himself. These trumpeters in the service of his prince-bishop played many sacred and secular pieces, all for several instruments. It was for them also that Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber wrote the 12 double trumpet sonatas we present here. On the other hand, the representatives of the authorities in Germany ensured strict observation of all edicts and regulations. Even the celebrated Bach-trumpeter and towm-piper Gottfried Reiche was never allowed to be portrayed with a proper trumpet due to the priveleges of court and field trumpeters. In order to represent him as one of the greatest masters of his time and art, however, the painter placed an instrument similar to a corno-di-caccia in his hand, together with a sheet with a small piece for virtuoso clarion. When we try in spite of these difficulties and adverse circumstances to gather a collection of musically valuable and characteristic examples of popular pieces for two trumpets from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it is in the first, place in order to acquaint modern trumpeters with something of the wealth of music, which can also be well played on a modern trumpet with valves. The originally used trumpets correspond to modern ones in the keys of C and D, but this does not mean that many of the pieces cannot be transposed to a more comfortable register. On top of this, we have tried to give a picture of the baroque court and field trumpeter, as well as of the mysterious clarion trumpeter, with the help of musically popular material. The origin of most of the pieces used is no longer clearly discernable. In most cases we possess second- or third-hand copies which have been handed down, and show signs of frequent use. A few cases where modernization of the second part obviously did not take place until the invention of stops, have been re-shaped into their supposed original form. A series of further dynamic details were left, and marked as optional suggestions in brackets. Kurt Janetzkyz.T. mit Pauken und B.c.
