This is a famous anecdote about the premiere of the opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio), which took place on July 16, 1782 at the Burgtheater Wien (Vienna). It illustrates Mozart’s ambition and self-confidence. Throughout Mozart’s lifetime, Die Entführung aus dem Serail was his most successful work outside of Vienna. It is still a much-performed opera. Tohru Takahashi has made a lively arrangement of the overture in its original key, C major. Libretto-'Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail' (Abduction from the Seraglio) was Mozart's first important success. The libretto by Johann Gottlieb Stephanie features another popular topic in later eighteenth-century drama - the rescue of anabducted heroine. In this instance she is a lady of noble Spanish birth who has been captured by Barbary pirates and sold into the captivity of the Pasha Selim who has fallen in love with her. In the end she is rescued by herbeloved Belmonte with the assistance of his servant Pedrillo. This edition of the libretto is in the orginal German with an English translation.

With parts for Horn in E flat and F.-With parts for Horn in E flat and F.We not only owe three of Mozart's horn concertos to his friendship with Ignaz Leutgeb; the solo part of this unusual chamber music work was also written especially for him. Instead ofhaving two violins the accompanying string quartet has two violas which complement the dark and warm timbre of the horn and lend the work a unique tonal effect. Echoes of motives from the 'Abduction from the Seraglio' allow usto suppose that it was composed around the same time as the Singspiel. As the autograph is missing this edition is based on the first edition. In addition the critical apparatus provides a careful evaluation of the secondarysources affording important insights into Mozart's intentions.
