Work for Chamber dating from 1988. The composer writes: MINNEWATER means 'love water'/'love lake', but when I began to compose the work, this direct meaning of the title was not very important to me. Rather the word itself had a magical sound. Later on, however, it occurred to me that the piece was full of mumbling swells and swarming cascades, and the sensation of water is perhaps most perceptible towards the end where lots of falling water movements are felt behind the emphasized rhythmic surface. Falls that moreover, quite literally at the end, sinks into the water. MINNEWATER has a subtitle: THOUSANDS OF CANONS, which directly refers to a compostion technique where all layers and elements in the music constantly are imitated; possibly waves imitating each other? The mudded and impalpable beginning of the work takes its starting point in one of my earlier pieces, the sextett LES TUCHINS (in fact the first 5 or 6 pages of the two pieces are quite identical but in MINNEWATER it is all 'blown up' to a larger ensemble). Quite soon, however, the thread to LES TUCHINS is cut off and it goes its own way; From the mumbling in the start - through swarming trills and pointilistic staccato movements - to a long section where the trumpet appears as a soloist and in a way conducts the movements of the remaining ensemble right to the rhythmic final section of the piece. MINNEWATER was commissioned by the Danish Radio for the German Ensemble Modern.

Most people consider improvisation to be an essential element of Jazz, and musicians occasionally use the word 'Jazz' as a synonym for improvisation. To improvise is to compose and perform simultaneously. A great deal of improvised music is spontaneous, unrehearsed, not written down beforehand. This particular book will contain exercises that have been written and formalized to determine the degrees of the scales, 1. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We will study carefully the subdivision of every scale according to two tetrachords. The first one is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the second is 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We will also play arpeggios of all kinds to extend the scale to its maximum degree. This book will explain to the student how to start a phrase of improvisation from any starting point of the scale (major, dominant, minor, diminished, etc.) Any individual or class using this book should listen to as much jazz, recorded and live, as possible. Good luck, and remember, 'JAZZ. IS ALIVE!'.

Work note by the composer: When I received the news of this commission, I had no idea what it would lead to. Writing for guitar solo is not the same as composing for orchestra where you have forty voices where you can easily mask an entire section. Here you are very naked to the bone. The starting point for this work was from J.S. Bach's Chaconne in D-minor that Johannes had performed in concert, originally written for violin but there is a version transcribed for guitar and piano made by Ferruccio Busoni. When I went to Cortona (in Tuscany, Italy) completed the southern mentality of this work. Arpalineais actually a merged word in Italian language. Arpa means harp, however in a musical context it's more or less resembled with the word arpeggio, which means broken chords. Lineameans line. The work is divided in three parts. I. Arpeggio: It starts with an opening chaconne-like sequence and is marked with a certain depth in which the chords starts to separate from the organum note in the bass and it culminates into a section called with rhythmical focus. These sections alternates, variates which each other. The middle section has a playful and childish atmosphere where the guitarist knocks on the body of the guitar resembling a Spanish folk instrument cajon. This is leading to a section which tends more to a very aggressive fusion-like riff that loses control and reaches its climax at the end. II. Linea: The static rhytmical pulse is now disintegrated and it forms more or less sort of a free, improvisational state in a rubatolike tempo. The character is described as a very hot day with temperatures rising above 37! C (or 100! F) where you can hardly do anything just sitting dozed off and pespiring because of the extreme heat watching a huge fog coming up in the evening that spreads around the Tuscan atmosphere. III. Finale: It starts off with fast one-note ostinati then more and more notes pop up like a gradual rain storm with thunder strikes! And eventually it leads to that is a large flood through the streets of an medieval Southern town. The work ends with a short circuit slapped strings along with extremely fast tremolos that reaches higher and louder as possible! Benjamin Staern

Missa Brevis, written for choir and wind band, was commissioned by the Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir.: Philippe Pfisterer) in Guebwiller (France), in celebration of the millennium of Pope Leon IX’sbirth in Éguisheim (France). The composer conducted the first performance on June 23, 2002. It was performed live for the French television channel France 2. The mass movements Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Deiare very suitable for the Catholic as well as the Protestant liturgy. For this mass, various ways for performing in diverse variable strengths are possible. An instrumental performance is possible if the brass represents the choir parts. In thisoption, it is desirable for the brass to be positioned separately from the rest of the band (on a gallery, for example), so that the idea of two choirs is approached. In a performance with a large choir, the brass can work very well as a support. Inthat case, the dynamics of the brass should be adapted somewhat, since these are actually intended for an instrumental performance. You can also leave out the brass entirely for the benefit of the choir. For the accompaniment of smaller choirs, youcan opt for a small ensemble from the band. This can also be a quartet, put together as desired. For the performance of this mass, the obvious choice is one of the above options. However, as an alternative, a performance with a combination of theseoptions (vocally/instrumentally) is also possible not just from an artistic point of view (variation), but also from a practical starting point for example in the case that the choir has rehearsed only two movements. With a full strength, theconductor can vary the instrumentation to his or her liking. Then the brass can also play a role in the accompaniment (instead of supporting the choir). The following combinations are possible:1. clarinet choir (from Eb Clarinet to BassClarinet)2. clarinet choir + saxophones3. brass (flugelhorns, horns, euphoniums, bass section)4. brass (2 trumpets / 2 trombones)5. double reeds (optional + flute, optional + string bass)6. tutti7. all winds8. allbrassIn a performance by brass band and choir, it is usually advisable to leave out option 1 (choir + brass + band). The choir sings self-reliantly, accompanied by a full brass band. In an instrumental performance, you can consider a combinedquartet (two cornets and two trombones) + brass band.Choral parts available separately.
2. clarinet choir + saxofoons
3. zacht koper (bugels, hoorns, euphoniums, bassen)
4. scherp koper (2 trompetten / 2 trombones)
5. dubbelrieten (eventueel + fluit, eventueel + contrabas)
6. tutti
Koorpartijen apart verkrijgbaar.M issa Brevis, geschrieben für Chor und Blasorchester entstand im Auftrag des Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir.: Philippe Pfisterer) in Guebwiller (Frankreich), anlässlich des tausendjährigen Jubiläumsder Geburt von Papst Leo IX in Éguisheim. Der Komponist dirigierte die Uraufführung am 23. Juni 2002.

Galea et Bellum was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. Research revealed that it had been the property of Skelte van Aysma, a Frisian officer who fought in the armies of the Princes of Orange Maurice and Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years’ War. This little piece of history was the starting point for this composition. As a leitmotif, the hymn ‘Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ (‘Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant’) has been used. This 17th century melody by Michel Franck, inan arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach, initially appears only in fragments, but grows to full stature toward the end of the work. An ideal contest piece with lots of challenges for your band.

Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ has been named after John Donne’s poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l’ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ werd genoemd naar het gelijknamige gedicht van John Donne. Improvised Music - Essays And Interviews by Jakob Thorkild Overgaard.
From the preface:
This book is the child of my extensive personal experienceas performerof musical improvisation. I havea large number of concerts, recordings and bands inmy baggage, and throughout my career as performerI have reflected much on the music as such, its origins, and its effects onperformer and listener alike. In addition to this, my M.A. in Music from CopenhagenUniversity provided me with a theoretical foundationwhich has sharpened my reflections on musicand fostered an interestinthe spoken word.As its point of departure, this book will attempt a discussionof improvised music after 1968, as a conceptand as an actual performing art. I shall use the terms‘freeimpr ovisation’ or ’ freely improvised music’ – as Ithink that they are the best, although I am of coursefully aware that there may be several other adequateterms for this music...
. ..There are sections solely based on my views and analyses as well as sections taking their starting point in the views of other writers and artists.
Besides, the book containsinterviews and communications with prominent performers of improvised music and theorists such as, inter alia, Danish Peter Ole Jørgensen, Swedish Raymond Strid, Danish Vagn E. Olsson and Torben Sangild, Postdoc at theDepartment of Arts and Cultural Studies, Copenhagen University.

Quatuor No 2 was first performed by the Tana string quartet on April 14, 2013, at Radio France, Paris. I conceived a piece whose principal subject was going to consist in the description of a minuscule sonic element. The description of this tiny initial material would be so precise, so detailed that, deployed on a much larger scale than its original one, it would occupy the entire duration of the piece. At that point, I just had to choose a sound model as the starting point of the piece, the sound that would best characterize the string instruments themselves: the noisy sound produced by the bow barely coming in contact with one of the strings, getting ready to acquire speed, weight, acceleration, and producing a full sound of a violin, a viola or a cello... -Daniel D'Adamo.

Some parishes have adults asking for information on what they must do to confirm themselves. Many of these adults practice their faith, perhaps they have already received a catechesis before, but now they want to confirm themselves, Because of this situation, they should not be placed in programs of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, nor with young adolescents who are preparing for Confirmation. The author shares in this book the content of a program that she has already beenusing for some years in her parish. Each session begins with a rutial that includes music, biblical readings, liturgical symbols, and signs or symbols of the sacraments of Initiation as a starting point. Using the Ritual for Confirmation as a platform, each session develops theological points expressed in the Ritual. The last session is a post-sacramental session, which invites newly confirmed adults to reflect on the experience of celebrating and receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, a true mystagogical model.
