This original work for equal voices from the composer Guido Lopez Gavilan is a virtuoso composition, full of humor and lyricism. The theme of this work is man & machine, as commissioned by Michael Nicolas. The theme is represented in that the Cellist becomes both in the piece man & machine where man indicates performing expressively with emotion, and a musical approach to the music, and machine indicates more precise rhythmic and technical accuracy, a somewhat stricter approach to the music. These two approaches gradually transition from one to another throughout the work. Anna Thorvaldsdottir frequently works with large sonic structures that tend to reveal the presence of a vast variety of sustained sound materials, reflecting her sense of imaginative listening to landscapes and nature. Deux Esquisses , by the Albanian-born British composer Thomas Simaku, is a six minute piece for solo Piano. Deux Esquisses is dedicated to Simaku's friend Terry Holmes and was composed in 2013 to celebrate the occasion of Holmes' 80th birthday. The piece begins with three notes taken from Holmes' name. Simaku describes these as the 'stepping stones of the musical landscape of the work' - 'sonic pillars holding together the architectural design of the piece as a whole'. The two esquisses retain their own individual characters, and in many ways contrast each other, yet are linked by a network of relationships. The world premiere of Deux Esquisses was given on the 25th November 2013,by Joseph Houston at Wigmore Hall, London.
