Description The eight sonatas of Guilmant may well lay claim to classical rank. Originally conceived for the French organs of Cavaille-Col, they are sufficiently broad in conception as to lose little, if anything, in their interpretation on English and American instruments. At the time of their composition (1874-1909) they brought to the organ a new sense which had been too little cultivated by organists. Edited by A. Eaglefield Hull. Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 5
Sonatas / Trios / Concertos - ed. by Pieter Dirksen
Organ Works Based on Compositions by Bach and Others
Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. In this volume with the Toccatas (and Fugues) as well as individual works the Swiss organist Jean-Claude Zehnder has amply proven his mettle as a Bach specialist here. Of particular interest in this book is the Canzona in d BWV 588. Written before 1707, this early work is found in a contemporary copy by Johann Gottlieb Preller with embellishments, fingerings and a closing cadenza - this version is printed in the Appendix. Similarly, the print of the early version of the Passacaglia BWV 582 is likely to meet with great interest.
Online you will find early versions, further ornamented versions, and pieces that can no longer be attributed to Bach as the Kleines harmonisches Labyrinth BWV 591 and the Prelude in G BWV 568./ Recueil / Orgue

Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. The use of contrasting manual colours between phrases and the incorporation of solo stops is notable for conveying Gray?s views on interpretation and his strong understanding of the instrument. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

Description Widely regarded as the culmination of French romanticism on the organ, Widor's symphonies include some of the most frequently performed and recorded works in the modern organ repertoire. Most of these symphonies - so called to emphasise the orchestral wealth of timbres offered by the new French organs - were written specifically to exploit the capacities of the modern Cavaille-Coll organ, especially the rich-toned five-keyboard instrument at St-Sulpice in Paris. Presented here in two inexpensive (this being the first), well-made volumes they offer a splendid resource for organists and all music lovers. Par GLADSTONE FRANCIS EDWARD. The organ sonatas of Francis Edward Gladstone (1845-1928) are fine examples of the developing English sonata tradition of the late-nineteenth century and early twentieth century. They exemplify a practical approach to the instrument with consistently moderate technical demands while also allowing the player scope for interpretation with the increasing availability of instruments that were conceived with a symphonic tonal palette in mind. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the English sonatas had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn?s very practical and popular approach to the instrument and the continued European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

Josef Rheinberger (b. 1839 d. 1901) was a prolific composer in almost every field but he found in the Organ the medium best fitted to his genius and temperament. This seems to be proved by the fact that his reputation as an Organ composer has grown and is now firmly established whereas his position in other branches has declined. His twenty sonatas and his numerous shorter pieces (about a hundred) make up one of the most important contributions to the Organ repertory. It may indeed be claimed that in the maintenance of a high level of quality and interest throughout a long series of works of both large and small scale his position as an Organ composer issecond only to that of Bach. Sonata No. 19:The G minor Sonata is one of a small proportion of the twenty - No. 15 in D is another - concerning whose merits players are divided. It does not meet one half-way. It is the longest of the twenty: some monotony inevitably results from the use of the key of G for all its movements : its difficulties are of the ungrateful type : and the vigour of its first movement is often rough-even harsh. Yet it appears to be among the favourites of those who know it well; the late Dr. G. J. Bennett (a pupil of Rheinberger's and a devotee of the Sonatas) placed it among the best of the later numbers. Sonata No. 20:In spite of some inequalities No. 20 makes a worthy end to a fine series. Rheinberger's failing health at the time of its composition is no doubt responsible for a few moments of indecision especially in the Finale. The invention shows little if any falling off. In all the sonatas there are few better themes of the broad diatonic type than that which opens the first movement ; and the pleasant tunes of the Intermezzo and Pastoral and the swinging subject of the Finale are in the true Rheinberger vein. But the lack of a substantial fugal section is felt: it might well have come as a central portion of the Finale which

When Reubke died in 1858 at the age of only 24 his achievements included two monumental works (a Piano sonata and an Organ sonata) and a few smaller compositions including a Trio for Organ. This Urtext edition brings together the two Organ works in a new edition: the Organ sonata is also known by the title of the 94th Psalm whose words inspired its content. The Sonata whose style and virtuosity show the influence of Liszt is one of the greatest Organ works of the whole Romantic period. The Trio a musically charming but technically less demanding piece should represent a welcome addition to the teaching repertoire forOrgan. The only original documents remaining for these works are the first editions. In this new edition we have attempted to correct obvious mistakes in the first impression and to offer cautious suggestions for improvements in dubious instances.

From 1772 onward Mozart wrote 17 short single movement works called Epistle Sonatas designed to be played in the Eucharist service between the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle Sonata in C (K.336) was the last of these written in 1780. Shortly afterwards the Archbishop decreed that a motet or hymn should be sung instead and they fell into disuse. The Epistle Sonata in C was originally scored for two Violins Basso Continuo and Baroque Organ. It has been arranged for solo Organ (with pedals) by Nigel Davison.
