The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadt’, or trumpeter city, Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem, Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident. Overture for a Special Occasion is feestelijk van sfeer.

Among the most frequently performed and well-known of P. I. Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) works, The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49 (more commonly known as the 1812 Overture) was written in 1880 to commemorate the 1812 defeat of Napoleon's invading French army by the Russians. Despite the composer's lack of enthusiasm about the project at its inception, claiming that he wrote it without any warm and loving feelings, Tchaikovsky acknowledged later that he did well in its composition, saying I absolutely do not know whether my overture (The Year 1812) is good or bad, but I rather think it is the former (pardon my immodesty). It premiered on August 20, 1882, in Moscow at the Art & Industry Exhibition, Ippolit Altani conducting. Famous for its use of cannons in the Finale, the Finale also calls for the inclusion of a military brass band, which is labelled as open instrumentation in the original. This edition by Martin Schmeling spells out specific instrumentation options for the banda. This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestra’s name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for itswarmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawa’s typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert. Tchaikovsk y's Overture 1812 is one of the most widely recognizable works in all of music. A bold musical statement, it was composed in 1880 to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon's army in 1812. Scored by Michael Story and Robert Smith, this rendition is a perfect fit for the end of the second year of instruction. The characteristic melody builds to a dramatic punctuated conclusion. Stunning! (2:00).

While serving as music director of Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra (1962-65), Jones was commissioned for a work to commemorate the 35th anniversary of that organization. The result was Overture for a City, which was premiered by SBSO in October, 1964. Today, fifty years later, the World Doctors Orchestra, an organization of physician/musicians from all over the world, is making its West Coast debut. The WDO traditionally chooses a work by a composer native to the country in which they perform, and for this Seattle concert they chose Sam Jones and his Overture for a City.
