Mark Taylor wrote the trumpet feature Scream Machine for a vinyl album by the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble in 1985. It was later published in a slightly simpler version called Brass Machine. This fanfare band arrangement by Philip Sparke has been arranged directly from the published jazz ensemble score and features four solo trumpets. Mark Taylor componeerde het stuk Scream Machine, waarin de trompet de hoofdrol speelt, voor een vinylalbum dat in 1985 werd uitgebracht door het Army Blues Jazz Ensemble. Het werd later uitgegeven in een iets eenvoudiger versie, met als titel Brass Machine. Dit arrangement voor fanfareorkest is een rechtstreekse bewerking van de partituur voor het jazzensemble. Second Symphonyis in four movements. The first movement opens with a scream. The subsequent parts of the movement form a unified but complex whole, where traces from the coming movements turn up - constantly in interaction with the scream and its echoes. The second movement is slow and rather melodious. It was actually performed in a “trailer version” - shortened and minimized in December 2018 in the Danish TV programme 'Deadline'. The third movement is a scherzo - teeming, rhythmic, with almost physical soft and violent meetings, like acts of love between the different layers of music. The last movement is a farewell song - a goodbye. A musical ship is approaching only to disappear again. Where the composer perceives the preceding movements as highly contemporary, there is a touch of the past in this last movement - the composer's past. Sorensen quotes his fourth string quartet 'Schreie und Melancholie', and in this movement he was also influenced by the fact that his mother passed away during the composition of this piece.

Steven Stucky has described the saxophone quartet as surprisingly comparable to the string quartet as a classic chamber music medium, while in the concerto format providing a worthy counterweight to the string orchestra. At times, the saxophones in Music for Saxophones and Strings “whisper, murmur, sigh, sing, squeal, or even scream” as the composer has written in notes about the work. Commissioned for the Raschèr Quartet, the work falls into two main sections. The composer continues that “the opening slow movement is dark, nocturnal, troubled; the language is densely chromatic. Mysterious, barely audible rustlings become increasingly more alarming; creatures cry in the night; and the movement climaxes in a lyric outpouring of melancholy, even tragic character. The music subsides by way of cadenzas for the baritone and tenor saxophone. The second, fast movement arrives almost unnoticed, since at first it too is made up of disconnected fragments — quirky, skittish, playful. There are irregular rhythmic accents, gliding quarter-tone runs, scurrying saxophone figures (suggesting, perhaps, a distant echo the bebop style), and screaming excursions into the altissimo register. Briefly the melancholy of the slow, nocturnal opening returns, before a quick coda leads to an emphatic conclusion.”.
