- Stefan Heucke.

Commissione d by a consortium of 20 high school and university bands coordinated by Scott Hanna of the University of Texas at Austin, Downshifting is inspired by Welcher’s joy of bicycle riding. Welcher explains in the program note: When I decided to write a piece for band that was basically entertaining and uplifting, it made perfect sense to call it Downshifting... With three gears on the front sprocket and seven on the rear, it’s possible to keep one’s legs going at a constant speed (for me, q = 126) while the bike itself may be moving very slowly or very quickly. I determined to capitalize on this in writing Downshifting, which keeps the same mathematical inner pulse, ‘shifting’ (with a ratchet) as the terrain changes..One of the joys of life for me is riding my 21-speed bicycle. As a basically non-athletic person who nonetheless likes to stay in shape, I have found that riding my bike provides just the exercise I need. The workout is strenuous, but pleasant—and the infinite variety of scenery I pass keeps me alert and wide awake. When I decided to write a piece for band that was basically entertaining and uplifting, it made perfect sense to call it Downshifting. With three gears on the front sprocket and seven on the rear, it’s possible to keep ones legs going at a constant speed (for me, that’s 126 to the quarter note) while the bike itself may be moving very slowly or very quickly. I determined to capitalize on this in writing the music, which manages to keep the same mathematical inner pulse, “shifting” (with a ratchet) as the terrain changes. So Downshifting begins with that steady pulse, on a grid of eighth notes in 2/4 to propel the little vehicle forward. There’s a joyous little tune in our heads as we begin our ride. As the initial thrill of riding on the flat gives way to monotony, we stay in that pulse for the first minute or so of the ride. Then, as the first hill becomes visible, we shift the bike down: even though the eighths are equal, the pulse feels slower (and we’re now in 6/8 time). Ultimately the compound meter shifts again as the climb begins, and we’re now plodding doggedly up the hill. (The music reflects all of these changes, with subtitles such as “Working harder—Seeing the climb, ahead”, “Steady and committed…the climb begins!”, “Straining against the grade”, etc.).There are two hills, and two long climbs (but in different keys, reflecting the change in scenery). When at last the summit of the second hill is reached (“Flying, Over the Top”), we coast at last down the other side at breakneck speed. The initial joyous melody returns, but now in a spread-out coasting pulse. At the end of the ride, we slow to a stop—then take one last sprint (shifting five times in the process) in order to end on a biker’s high.Downshifting was commissioned by a consortium of fourteen high school and college bands, overseen by my longtime colleague at the University of Texas, Scott Hanna. The piece is dedicated to him (and to all bicycle enthusiasts).

Since 2001 the Ninth has been included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. Beethoven was preoccupied with his unique work for many years, since at least 1815, and still shortly before his death, according to the highly complex source situation. The work will now finally be available as an edition produced from the new Beethoven Complete Edition in time for the 2020 anniversary year commemorating the composer's 250th birthday. Not all doubtful cases can be clarified, not all gaps closed, but numerous aspects have been further illuminated in this edition. New findings and source evaluations taken into account here, appear, for instance, pertaining to the work's title, the tradition of the metronome indications, the contrabassoon part, and the underlying vocal text in the finale, as well as in the original rendering of the sforzato and forte markings. The edition is to be considered, according to its editor Beate Angelika Kraus, as a contribution to the understanding of a work in which there is a discrepancy between its significance in musical life and the critical appreciation of its musical text..

Hayd n’s Symphony No. 85, ‘La Reine de France’, belongs to the set of six ‘Paris’ Symphonies, Nos. 82–7, composed in 1785–6 to a commission by the directors of the Concert de la Loge Olympique at the instigation of the Comte d’Ogny and were first performed by that society during the 1787 season. The soubriquet ‘La Reine’ was attached to the work soon after its first performance (and was included in the first edition of printed parts) reflecting its status as a favourite work of Marie Antoinette.

Hayd n’s Symphony No.94 was first performed on 23 March 1792 at the Hanover Square Rooms under the direction of Salomon as concertmaster with the composer himself at the fortepiano. The work was an instant success and soon became – and remains – one of Haydn’s most popular symphonies. The soubriquet Surprise was attached to the work very early on, and was prompted by the unexpected forte chord (reinforced by the Timpani stroke) in bar 16 of the Andante. In German-speaking countries the symphony is known by the nickname Mit dem Paukenschlag for the same reason.

Within approximately six weeks Haydn, in 1801, composed his Creation Mass as the fifth of altogether six late missae solemnes commissioned by his employer, Prince Nikolaus II. Esterhazy. The sobriquet Creation Mass is not authentic, but it is probably based on the quotation in the Gloria taken from the oratorio Die Schopfung.

Nun laissez vibrer ist eines! ich hoffe, gelungen!!!(Nicolaus A. Symp hony No. 44 is one of a number of Haydn’s middle period works often regarded as representing the so-called Sturm und Drang (‘Storm and Stress’) style of melodramatic realism taken over from contemporary German literary and dramatic models. The symphony is monotonal – each movement being in the same key, with contrast provided by excursions into the tonic major. Contrapuntal writing pervades the whole work; the second movement, unusually, is a minuet and is a strict double canon at one bar’s interval (‘Canone in Diapason’ is Haydn’s term) which itself is contrasted by the lyrical Trio section in the tonic major. The third movement, an Adagio in the tonic major, prompted the symphony’s long-adopted soubriquet, ‘Trauer’ (‘Mourning’) as it was said to have been requested by the composer himself to be played at his own funeral.2 The monothematic contrapuntal Finale reverts to the tense emotional level of the opening Allegro.

Hayd n’s Symphony No. 48 was long thought to have been written for, and performed in honour of the state visit of Empress Maria Theresia to Eszterháza in 1773. However, research by Robbins Landon has shown that the symphony should be redated to 1770. Landon rightly comments that although the accepted soubriquet may be mistaken, the message is right, for in its magnificence it is a ‘Symphony for Queens and Emperors’.

So near so far, Edition Zeitklang, ez-31029World premiere of the 1st version: Berlin, March 11, 2001World premiere of the complete version: Stuttgart, January 31, 2002.
