Psalm Variations was composed originally in the spring and summer of 2000 for orchestra. The piece was reworked in the summer of 2002 for organ duet, and is dedicated to Marilyn and James Biery. It is based on the American folk melody Resignation. This melody is most often associated with the text, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23 by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). Although Psalm Variations is not a religious piece, the variations do follow the flow of the text.
