An essential part of any good instrumental musicprogram is for the students to play a solo with pianoaccompaniment. Having students play in a smallchamber-music setting is a very beneficial exercisetoward improving the student’s overall musicianship. Many states have solo and ensemble festivals wherestudents can play for a judge and receive feedback ontheir performance. As part of the process of playing asolo with piano, students can improve many aspects oftheir playing such as tone quality, intonation, techniqueand ensemble skills. It helps them to overcome anyinhibitions about playing alone, which can only have apositive benefit for any student. These solos are different in that they have been composedor arranged with the ability level of the student in mind.We have called on our experience as music educators, composers, conductors and editors to put together a collection of solos that will be useful to the student formultiple years. We feel strongly that these solos areboth musically fresh and more indicative of the typesof contemporary music that the students will encounteras they develop into their later years in instrumentalmusic. It is our mission to help to improve the overallmusicianship of students. We took great care in makingsure that there is always a musical sophistication in allof these pieces, even though the technical demandsare somewhat limited. Playing with good phrasing isessential at every level, and it is a challenge that wehope all young musicians will strive to achieve. We areconfident that this collection of solos will lead you in theright direction.
