While Mike Garson has achieved recognition in jazz (Mel Torme, Stan Getz, Stanley Clarke) rock (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt) and classical (L.A. Philharmonic, New World Symphony) circles, he is probably best known for his long-time association with David Bowie, spanning four decades from the 1972-1973 Ziggy Stardust Tour to the present. The 2011 Reference Recordings HDCD release, "The Bowie Variations", marks Garson's first piano solo recordings of iconic Bowie songs. Of the result David Bowie himself said it best, commenting"Whatever Mike lends his hands to invariably becomes something magical." Volume 1 contains four songs from the album carefully notated and edited as performed: Space Oddity -- John, I'm Only Dancing -- Life on Mars? -- Tribute To David.
