Ernesto Cavallini was one of the most distinguished clarinetists of the 19th century. He was especially praised for his large tone and remarkable facility. Many of his numerous clarinet compositions were fantasias based on operas of the day. Among his other works are two concertos, clarinet duos, and the Thirty Caprices, a pedagogical work popular worldwide. The present set of duets comes from Sei Gran Duetti, dedicated to his friend Saverio Mercadante and published by G. Ricordi. They are somewhat more technically demanding than his better known Three Grand Artistic Duets.
