This medley includes two immediately recognizable American folk songs. Shenandoah was sung by pioneers on their way to begin a new life in the West. The theme, which is first stated in the violins, is accompanied by a counter-melody that hints at things to come. Simple Gifts comes from America's Appalachian region. The shakers, who settled in this area, sang this as a song of thanks in their religious services. The last chorus is performed at a slightly slower tempo, bringing the medley to a stately close.
