Reviews about Concerto in B minor:

Rating: 5 Great concerto, good lead up to the more difficult concertos by  * VSM MEMBER * on March 2018
I picked this concerto as the next to tackle before I work on the Sibelius concerto followed by Tchaikovsky. I have been playing the violin for about 6.5 years and have learned the Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Beethoven, Scottish Fantasy, Lalo, among others. This concerto is taking a bit more time for me to learn simply because I am not as familiar with the music. The runs are not easy because of the minor keys and frequent switches to other major or minor keys. I find certain parts of the each of the three movements to be somewhat disappointing. It's more like "let downs" ... I was expecting development and further development when Saint Seems did not build on the theme. The second movement in particular started off beautifully and then it ventured off to some rather unexpected and disappointing sections. I prefer the renditions by Clara-Jumi Kang and Gil Shaham on youtube. Shaham plays at a somewhat slower pace ... every note is clean and expressive. Concerto is not performed as often for a good reason.
Rating: 5 Concerto in B minor: Demanding yet Lyrical by  * VSM MEMBER * on September 2008
This concerto manages to accomplish what many cannot; it is both challenging and virtuostic while still maintaining a lovely lyrical quality throughout. It is romanticism/impressionism at its best, and, in my opinion, should be played much more than it is.
The difficulty level is high; I have played for over eleven years and still find this challenging but definitely do-able. It is comparable to the Bruch violin concerto and possibly not quite as challenging as the Mendhelsson.
I recommend getting Joshua Bell or Itzchak Perlman's recordings of this; both do an excellent job.
