Published by Elsie Loftus (A0.1017441)."L'Incubo" is a short piece (roughly three minutes long) intended for a string quintet. "L'Incubo", translating literally to "The Nightmare", is in three parts mimicking the construct of a nightmare or night terror. The introduction hastily expresses the beginnings of a night terror through the minor runs in the first violin part, then developed into organized chaos with merging duple and triple meter in the first major section. The first major part fades into a lulling second 'movement', to where the strings terrace in harmonizing parts that increasingly become more minor and blurred as the nightmare comes back to the surface. The initial chaos from the first miniature movement repeats, then fades as the listener 'wakes up' from the nightmare. The piece is relatively easy to read pitch wise, but rhythmic accuracy is a must due to the eerie, combined duple and triple meter. "L'Incubo" would be well suited for intermediate or advanced musicians. .
