The work is inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi and his time on the mountain at La Verna (where today sits a Franciscan monastery and sanctuary dedicated to him). It is told that during his time on the mountain, St. Francis received the stigmata in 1224.
The piece is subtitled "cantus e toccata per organo" and falls into three sections: 1) San Francesco in preghiera (St. Francis in Prayer); 2) San Francesco riceve le stimmate (St. Francis receives the stigmata) and 3) San Francesco glorifica Dio (St. Francis glorifies God.)
