Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) is one of the most important female composers of the romantic era. After studying in Leipzig she became involved with the suffragette movement. Her "March of the Women" was the anthem of the women's social and political union. When she once got imprisoned for protests, she conducted a suffragette choir - singing this march outside - from her cell window... holding a toothbrush!
