"The Wreckers" is an opera in three acts, composed by Dame Ethel Smyth to a libretto in French by Henry Brewster. The theme for the opera came from walking trips that Smyth took across Cornwall, where she visited places where shipwrecks had happened; these dramatic scenes spurred Smyth on and morph into both a dramatic, but romantic opera. After spending considerable energy in trying to get the work performed in French, the first performance took place in a German translation by John Bernhoff in Leipzig (11 November 1906). Smyth persisted in her attempts to see it staged elsewhere, but it was not until the conductor Thomas Beecham championed the work that a complete, staged performance was achieved in England in 1909. Thereafter performances have been rare. Thanks to an appearance at the BBC Proms on 31 July 1994 (presented to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death) this laid the foundations for subsequent performances. The 'Overture' is performed quite often as a standalone piece, encapsulating the drama and romance of the opera in just over 8 minutes - a splendid addition to the repertoire for modern concert band.
