The part song, written for mixed choruses or equal-voiced ensembles, was a form actively cultivated by nineteenth-century German composers, Schubert, Schumann, Weber, Brahms -- and in this case, Mendelssohn. In fact, Mendelssohn wrote more than 25 of these very attractive pieces. The songs were intended for amateur or semi-professional groups. Their texture is for the most part homophonic, and they were to be sung without accompaniment. The lyrics of some of the finest German poets were often chosen for the texts and Mendelssohn has used texts by Uhland for both of these settings.
