Adapted for Clarinet Quartet by Stephen Davies
In 1926 a competition was held at the Paris Conservatoire to write a Fugue in four parts using Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass clefs, the participating students were to be locked in their rooms from 6.00am to 11.30pm, with only a pencil and manuscript paper, no instruments or educational books were allowed.
Each student was given a short musical subject from their professor, who was at the time Henri Rabaud.
That year yielded three winners, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Revel & Jean Rivier.
I've adapted each Fugue for the Clarinet, the changes in articulation are my own, and presents the three Fugues as three different pieces using the same subject!!
