Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1184257).A fantastic work for more advanced bands, 'Short Piece' was originally composed by Julie Perry for chamber orchestra in 1952 and then expanded for full forces. The African-American composer and conductor was born in Kentucky, studying at Westminster Choir College and then Juilliard; she also worked with Nadia Boulanger, winning the Boulanger Grand Prix for her Viola Sonata. Her work includes a dozen symphonies and a pair of piano concertos; also three operas and a ballet. In the words of John Henken, this piece is 'an initially raucous, highly energised essay...There are edgy lyrical contrasts, and the work closes in a haunted Lento, before a whiplash ending returns the aggressive opening thunder.'
