Composed by Andrew Peterson, John Wesley Work Jr., John Jacob Niles, George Frideric Handel. Arranged by C. Foster Payne. Christmas,Classical,Holiday. Score and parts. 86 pages. FossPayneMusic #559181. Published by FossPayneMusic (A0.953441).

Christmas Overture is a purely instrumental work for full orchestra that reminds us of some of the lesser-known Christmas carols such as “The Holly and the Ivy” set to a western rhythm that transitions into a clarinet and piano led soft jazz rendition of “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” The music then shifts hears into a brass ensemble arrangement of “I Wonder as I Wander,” followed by an oboe solo on the same tune. The piece closes as we revisit the western style it opened with on “Joy to the World.” A great medley for the Christmas season at your church!
