Published by Rob Bushnell (A0.752389).Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (in C minor), one of his best known works, was written between 1804 and 1808. It was first performed in the Theater an der Wien, Vienna. It was described by E. T. A. Hoffmann as "one of the most important works of the time". Similar to the Eroica and Pastrole Symphonies, it was nicknamed "Schicksals-Sinfonie" or "Fate Symphony", though not by Beethoven himself. Since the Second World War, it is sometimes referred to as the "Victory Symphony", with the "V" coincidentally also the Roman numeral character for the number five and due to the opening phrase ("dum-dum-dum-daah") also being the Morse code for the letter "V".
The second movement (Andante con moto) is in double variation form (two themes are stated and then variations ensue) and is a very lyrical piece.
This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Professor Peter Graham (Professor of Composition at the University of Salford, UK) said of this arrangement that it was a "first-class job".
