Being a Mandolin player, I wasn't really happy with the sparkly sound of the original string configuration. However, it sounds absolutely lovely tuned GDAd with the J81's. It should be mentioned that if you are looking to tune GDEA like the mandolin you're better off getting an octave mandolin from the same maker as they seem better suited. The Irish Bouzouki has a bit longer scale than the Octave Mandolin making some of the GDAE fingering nearly impossible. I find that the GDAd tuning is not so far from the mandolin tuning that I'm completely lost. It's actually a nice change and great for chords. If you want to play tunes get an Octave for the shorter scale. I could see myself adding one to the arsenal some day. Either way, it's a great way to give those pinkies a workout. For the long scale this thing is actually pretty light and easy to carry around. It's a only bit deeper and larger than a backpacker type guitar but with a much more commanding sound.
The build of the Trinity College TM-375 is flawless. The finish is spotless and the tone woods are of good quality. The tuners are silky smooth and the bone nut/bridge combination seem sturdy enough. Trinity College instruments are made in China for a company called Saga Music out of San Fransisco. They also produce the Rover and Kentucky line of mandolins which are of good quality and value. I own one of both and although the quality doesn't quite match up to their Trinity College line they are good instruments. Trinity College is Saga's top end line. You can Google the name and get to their website. Overall, I am very happy with my Zouk and look forward to learning the chord progressions. It has a very rich sound and seems to want to play Led Zeppelin right out of the box! With the above scale and tuning issues in mind, you can't really go wrong with this purchase.
This bouzouki arrived securely packaged and in a sturdy, hardshell case. After a few minutes of set up (I'd purchased the D'Addario J81 Strings and put them on instead of the ones that came with the 'zouk) I was ready to play. The action on my 'zouk has been great, not too high and not too low and plays smoothly.
The bridge was the thing that took the longest as there are no instructions with the 'zouk. I followed the 2x12+1/4" Rule for floating bridges. You measure from the nut to the middle of the 12th fret, double that measurement and add 1/4" for the best intonation point to place the bridge. For this 'zouk, that looked like this: 12 3/4" x 2 = 25 1/2" + 1/4" = 25 3/4" (or 25.75"). That's where you place the front of the bridge, it's your scale length.
After playing with this 'zouk for almost a month, I'm glad I decided on it. I play it in GDAD and I can play most anything from celtic to bluegrass to folk to worship music. If you capo up to about the 9th or 10th fret you get more of that mandolin sound and can replicate some good 'ol bluegrass-y tones. I've played with other guitarists and it cuts through and is distinctive enough to know that it's a 'zouk.
Overall, I can't say enough about this unique hybrid instrument and I'm glad I purchased it. I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to experiment with as I say "a mandolin with it's neck stretched" and wants a celtic sound drone all its own.
Top reviews from other countries
Playing a melody in two octaves at once with one finger is such a honking great idea. Some people modify this instrument to use Irish union strings on the bottom two courses rather than Greek octave.
Well I'd prefer to have all courses be an octave apart, even the top two! Bring it on!
Don't worry about higher frets not being in tune. That's what the movable bridge is for. Just wiggle it around until your tuner is happy on the 12th fret.
