So I asked the composers to write a Prelude of the kind that Tarrega wrote and which count among his most significant compositions.These Preludes for Tarrega, all written between August and November 2015, are very different from each other. The common feature, however, between these and the Preludes by Tarrega is their brevity, an average level of performance difficulty and guaranteed easy listening, even when written in a non-tonal language (like the meditative and melancholy piece by Emilio Calandin and the one by Marco Smaili, with its Impressionistic feel reminding one of Tarrega's most famous pupil, Miguel Llobet).In some Preludes (the ones by Paolo Ugoletti, Roberto Tagliamacco, Claudia Montero) the reference to Lagrima, one of Tarrega's most famous Preludes, is evident in form, title and some citations. Ugoletti and Tagliamacco work well and expressively on harmony and counterpoint, while the Argentinian Claudia Montero links Tarrega to a heartbreaking Buenos Aires...In Alessandro Spazzoli there is rather more a connection with Tarrega's sense of melody and deep simplicity, while Marco Reghezza remembers ironically what was brewing in European music when Tarrega was alive: in fact, his Como Preludio goes across the 24 keys - and even a reference to Wagner's Tristan raises its head...I am delighted for this volume to come out at the time of the fiftieth edition of the Certamen Tarrega.(Piero Bonaguri).

Who would have guessed there would be so little repertoire for three piccolos? Thus the idea for Piccolo Ridicolo was born – a celebratory and humorous collaboration for three piccolos, with much debt and apologies owed to Rossini, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and more.Thank you Andrew and Rose for being my first guinea pigs, my ASO flute colleagues for various road tests, my sister Maria Grenfell for her initial typesetting, and my mentor Leone Buyse for encouraging me to seek publication of the piece.

This is how the composer Camille Saint-Saens described his impression of what was probably Charles Gounod's best-known setting of the mass. The work written in 1855 in honor of the patron saint of church music, soon became well-known beyond the borders of France and acquired a degree of popularity like almost no other sacred composition. Inspired by the French Romantic and Impressionist traditions, my romances for fute and piano, composed during late July and early August 1984, was carefully conceived for the marvelous lyrical and technical gifts of Robert Stallman and Richard Goode, to whom the work is warmly dedicated. All three Romances, although brief in duration, unfold with a sense of large gesture and design. The first Romance is in 3/4 time and flows generally in the manner of a lyrical waltz with occasional turbulent interruptions. The second Romance is in 4/4 time, unfolding in a stately Baroque-like manner, and the third Romance is in 2/4 time, melodically expansive and often tempestuous. All three Romances strive to honor the goals of traditional performance practice while, at the same time, they create an energy and drama of modernity and contemporary richness. Picc ola musica profonda entstand für die Kontrabassklasse von Jürgen Michel an der Städt. Clara-Schumann-Musikschul e Düsseldorf, insbesondere für den Einsatz bei Jugend musiziert. Der erste Satz Canzonetta profonda kam im Jahre 2016 bei diesem Wettbewerb zur Uraufführung. Laurenz Radig spielte beim Regionalwettbwerb Düsseldorf und beim Landeswettbewerb NRW in Altersgruppe 3. Ihm wurde der Sonderpreis des DTKV Düsseldorf/Mettmann für die beste Interpretation eines zeitgenössischen Stückes zuerkannt. Begleitet wurde er am Klavier von Susanne Ankener-Maczewski. Die maßvollen technischen Anforderungen der drei Sätze schließen neben den traditionellen Bogen- und Grifftechniken auch natürliche Flageoletts ein sowie ein Flageolett-Glissando.
