These musical sketches were written to provide a variety of styles that are fun to play and yet sound harder than they are. Each solo represents a familiar animal that walks slow, jumps or runs fast. This will stimulate the students imagination helping them play and interpret each piece easily. This collection of 16 new piano solos will introduce piano students to a variety of musical styles. These pieces were composed with love for all my piano students and the hope that students everywhere will enjoy playing them as much as I have enjoyed composing them.

In his work Palindrome for piano (2000), Kirmo Lintinen has chosen a predetermined form: perfectly mirrored symmetry, and he makes it work wonderfully! Lintinen is not interested in hidden structures and working with minutiae, but rather lets the palindromic qualities of the palindrome be clearly visible and audible. Rather than using abstract tonerows, Lintinen mirrors a three-tiered musical characteristics, adding and then letting go suspension: Cantabile semplice/Giocoso/Fuocoso e flessibile - Fuocoso e flessibile/Giocoso/Cantab ile semplice. The duration of the work, 180 seconds, is divided into six segments: 45sec:30sec:15sec:15sec:3 0sec:45sec (3:2:1:1:2:3). The shorter the segment, the more raucuous the material.

In this collection of piano solos, you will find the WORLDÆS FIRST PIANO SOLO ever composed that can be played backwards and forwards and upside downàand sound the SAME! The piece is called ôSOLOSö and is an ambigram and a palindrome. Two variations of ôSOLOSö that are more difficult are added that use the melody of this unusual piece. There is a special piece called ôMirrorö. When held to a mirror it will have the mirror effect and sound very nice the way it looks in the mirror. The collection includes a Palindrome, ôSTATSö which is excellent for sight reading and is beneficial for the eyes as you read it backwards. This collection has a wide variety of pieces suitable for recitals, relaxing, and sight reading. Also included is a special piece titled ôEncoreö, which was composed just for that very reason, to play last, but not least. I used the musical letters in the name of the man that booked me for the concert after he called and requested that I have an encore ready!Every piece was composed from my piano as I heard a melody or tried to put a feeling or thought to music. Every piece has a story. I hope the music in this book speaks to your heart and brings listening pleasure as well as a feeling of love, joy, and peace.I appreciate this opportunity to share my favorite piano solos with you and may they be an inspiration for other composers and fun for students and teachers to perform.Includes access to online audio.

'Krystallen ', for flute and piano, was written in 1973 for the flautist, Susan Milan, who gave the first performance on BBC Radio 3 with Clifford Benson in January 1975. The music is in three sections, the last of which is a varied repeat, with palindromic elements, of the opening. These outer sections are texturally three-part inventions, consisting of gently interweaving, equal-voiced polyphony while, in the central passage, individual figures are isolated and exchanged by both instruments.

To celebrate 25 years of excellence and promotion of new concert works, the New York Virtuoso Singers commissioned 25 contemporary composers for 25 new choral works, all of which now appear on their recording, 25 X 25: Twenty-Five Premieres for Twenty-Five Years. Among the 25 is Richard Wernick's The Devil's Game. Here, Wernick uses The Devil's Verse, a Latin palindrome that still puzzles us today as to its meaning, and appropriately embraces repetitive use of the verse in a musical palindrome of his own.The text is a palindrome (in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni), a rather mysterious one called The Devil’s Verse. Its origin is vague (probably Roman, but possibly Medieval) and it does not surrender its meaning easily; many scholars have fussed over it. It is a riddle as well as a palindrome, in other words a puzzle within a puzzle. My preferred translation, without going into the niceties of Latin grammar, is “We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire.”This music is also a palindrome, the outer parts of which are homophonic, while the turning around point in the center (where the basses enter for the first time) is a brief double canon.

Work for solo piano. My snapshots are scribblings in pencil or ink, with a little color, and that's all -Kees van Dongen. This collection of short pieces is neither akin to sketches nor to studies, nor to preludes, nor to variations in the classical meaning of the word. They are like the rough drawings that make up a kind of travel notebook, and as such they demand a piano writing that involves widely varied musical gestures. This multiplicity of very different motifs crates sudden ruptures in the sonic atmosphere. This writing doesn't develop but rather hints at things in order to reach equilibrium between light and deep. A play on variants of the core motifs runs right through across the work. Each piece centers on a motif or a group of motifs in particular that builds the shape of a palindrome.

Robert Saxton 's Hortus Musicae , Book 1 was commissioned by Ian Richie for the 2013 City of London Festival with funds provided by the John S. Cohen Foundation. The first performance was given by Clare Hammond on June 24th 2013 at the church of St Mary Le Bow. The title, less 'literal' in Latin than in the vernacular, refers to the idea of an allegorical/metaphysical garden (reference to a 'real', or existing, garden might be implied by Hortus Musicus) with various facets. The titles of the individual pieces/movements, with their respective garden image, are as follows: 1) Hortus Somniorum: a fleeting vision of a 'magical' garden 2) Hortus Temporis: a reflection of/on the floralclock described by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) in his [metaphysical] poem The Garden: How well the skilful gardener drew Of flowers and herbs this dial new Where from above the milder sun Does through a fragrant zodiac run; And, as it works, the industrious bee Computes its time as well as we. How could such sweet and wholesome hours Be reckoned but with herbs and flowers! 3) Hortus Cantus: A garden in which nature 'sings' (praises), in the manner of a 'chorale prelude' and ending with the cantus firmus transformed into bells. 4) Hortus Infinitatis: A meditative/formal garden representing Time suspended, in the form of a palindromic prolation canon combined with a harmonic ground (chaconne). 5) Saltatio Hortensis: A (summer) garden of dancing, celebratory nature. Its essence (and that of the entire cycle, both metaphorically and structurally/formally) is summed up in words spoken by Miranda in WH Auden's 1944 Tempest [Shakespeare]-inspired poem The Sea And The Mirror; So, to remember our changing garden, we Are linked as children in a circle dancing. Duration: 15 minutes.

Gavo tte en Rondeau from Violin Partita No.3 (BWV 1006).Paper, daylight and candles were often in short supply during Bach??s very busy lifetime but simply to view the autograph score in his hand of the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin is to be bound into a spell by the beauty, skill and extempore furiosity of the script. The cycle has been described as a miracle of implied harmony and rich harmonic textures, ??its freshness and maturity, its depth, its beauty, its response to all moods? informing a work of humanity and genius unparalleled in all the literature for solo violin. The present arrangement of the Gavotte en Rondeau from Partita No. 3 (BWV1006) is based on Rachmaninoff??s intricate harmonisation for piano. ??Ruht Wohl?? from the St. John Passion (BWV 245). In the final Chorus from the St. John Passion, Bach imbues the popular dance-forms of the Sarabande and Minuet with a spiritual theme of atonement and reconciliation. The three ritornelli stand like pillars in a palindromic structure whose unbroken melodic line and flowing counterpoint represent a ??timeless continuance??. The original scoring is light and transparent, and transfers appropriately to a choir of cellos without the loss of any counterpoint. Prelude Op. 25 No 3 by Rachmaninoff. Throughout his career as a composer and virtuoso pianist, this Prelude was one of Rachmaninoff??s favourite pieces and he dedicated it to his teacher Alexander Siloti. A powerful structure is built up from a small rhythmic motif, reminiscent of Tchaikovsky??s representations of fate or Shostakovich??s of looming state power. This is contrasted with a lyrical middle section and a final phrase marked leggiero in which the music flies off into the air like a bird.
