Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) began composition of his Great Mass in C minor, K. 427/417a in 1782 as a promise to himself to write a major work for his native Salzburg. This period was shortly after he had moved to Vienna in 1781, and Mozart wrote in a letter that he made the promise before having married Constanze, a decision which his father Leopold disapproved, though he only really began the work after the marriage, completing all that he did in 1783. The work remained uncompleted from the sense of a liturgical mass, missing some of the Credo movements, all of the Agnus Dei, and parts of the Sanctus and the Benedictus, and Mozart called it a half a mass in a letter to his father. Despite this, all that was completed was performed at a liturgical mass on October 23, 1783, at St. Peter's Church in Salzburg during Mozart and Constanze's three-month sojourn there to introduce Constanze to the family. It is believed that Mozart borrowed from other works to make it complete for a liturgical performance, and it is thought likely that Constanze sang the high first soprano solo part. The work remained in this state until German musicologist Alois Schmitt's work to complete the mass was published in 1902. The Schmitt edition became the standard edition throughout the 20th century. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.4(1st sub Tpt in C).0: Timp: Org: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo SSTB: Mx Chor.

The cantata for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Ah! I see now, as I to the wedding bidden, BWV 162 was first performed on 25 October 1716 in the Castle church at Weimar. During the first year in his position as Thomaskantor, Bach made a revival performance of the cantata on 10 October 1723. For this Leipzig version he added an additional obbligato voice in the first movement and in the final chorale he added a Corno da tirarsi, which played colla-parte with the soprano. However, we do not know what this mysterious instrument looked like. For performances today we recommend using a trumpet or a slide trumpet. The cantata begins not with an introductory chorus, but rather with a sonorous bass aria with a string accompaniment and obbligato trumpet. The following movements, movement 2 through 5, are also performed by vocal soloists. The third movement, a soprano aria, presents a peculiarity: the obbligato wind parts were not contained in the original version of this cantata. Our edition offers a reconstruction for the flute, made by the famous Bach interpreter and expert, Masaaki Suzuki. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3116200.

Johannes Brahms completed his Symphony No. 1 in September and October 1876 in Lichtenthal near Baden-Baden. It was given its first performance in Karlsruhe on 4 November 1876 under the direction of Otto Dessoff. Brahms later personally conducted the work several times. After a thorough revision of the second movement, the symphony was first published by Simrock in score, parts and piano reduction in 1877. The principal source for the present edition is the first print of the score as well as the autograph transmitted for three movements and scribal copies.,,Was kann man zum Lobe dieser Neuausgabe mehr sagen, als dass sie ausserordentlich leserfreundlich und in jeder Hinsicht willkommen sind. Compo ser Otto M. Schwarz completed his first Concerto for trumpet in October 2009. Schwarz displays a special knack in writing for this instrument, thanks to his trumpet studies undertaken with Professor Josef Pomberger at the Music Conservatory in Vienna. Concerto for Trumpet No. 1 'Trumpet Town' was commissioned by the police-orchestra of Upper Austria, under the baton of Andreas Schwarzenlander. The work was premiered on 17 November 2009. The soloist for the evening was trumpeter Franz Wagnermeyer, who also studied at the Vienna Conservatory and who currently performs with, amongst others, the international group “Ten of the Best”. A rapid flourish in 12/8 time opens Concerto for Trumpet No. 1 'Trumpet Town'. The metric changes that follow affect the pulse rhythmically and melodically, in exciting and unexpected ways. The solo trumpet's displays of technical prowess and bravura alternate with the film-score-like tutti sections of the brass ensemble. The slow, almost elegiac, central section can be performed on the flugel horn, while the closing reprise demands that both the soloist and the orchestra give of their best as the piece comes to an exciting, colourful, and uplifting finale. This piece is also available for trumpet and piano.

The Last Friend of Napoleon is based on a true piece of Dutch history. In October 1813, when Napoleon was beaten after his unsuccessful Russian campaign, the French withdrew from the Netherlands. At the beginning of 1814, the whole country had been liberated except for the town of Delfzijl, still occupied by French troops. This programmatic work is about political and military stubbornness, chasing dreams, and about love always following its own unequalled way. Being one of the most acknowledged composers of today, Dirk Brossé has created an epic work that depicts a dramatic story, using the full range of the symphonic band resulting in challenging brass passages, a widerange of percussion and a lot of strong, beautiful and melodic material. The Last Friend of Napoleon is gebaseerd op een waargebeurd stukje Nederlandse geschiedenis. The Last Friend of Napoleon est basé sur une histoire vraie néerlandaise.

Thanks to Alois Schmitts supplements, the work became performable in its entirety for the first time in 1901. Basing himself on Mozarts sketches, Schmitt completed the instrumentation, which at times had not been definitely notated, constructed the Agnus Dei from the Kyrie of the Mass and compiled the missing parts of the Credo by borrowing from other works by Mozart.

Already a popular recital work for piccolo and piano, and winner of the 2009 International Piccolo Symposium biennial composition competition, Flash! is now available for solo piccolo with band accompaniment - fresh from the NFA premiere, featuring piccolo legend Walfrid Kujala. The East Coast premiere is scheduled for 11/18/10, featuring Boston Symphony piccoloist Linda Toote with the Boston University wind ensemble.By 2008, Sonatine de Giverny was being performed so frequently that I decided to write another piccolo piece as soon as an opportunity arose. Since Giverny is a study in French style, I knew the new piece must be in my own authentic American voice. That summer, Giverny was performed six times at the NFA convention as a mandatory competition piece, and I returned from the August 2008 convention all charged up to write something different for piccolo. In September, Kate Prestia-Schaub wrote to tell me about the International Piccolo Symposium's new composer competition. She proposed that if I write a new piccolo/piano piece, she would record a demo for me to submit to the competition, and she would submit applications to perform it at the 2009 IPS convention and NFA convention. What amazing timing! I set out to compose a flashy showpiece with a jazzy snap, lots of idiomatic scales and arpeggios, and a scary middle section, and by mid-October FLASH! was complete. Kate followed suit and all 3 wishes came true - FLASH! won first prize in the IPS composer competition, and she performed it both there and at NFA. In the meantime many other piccoloists have added the work to their repertoire, Cynthia Ellis wrote an article about it for Flute Talk magazine, and Walfrid Kujala commissioned a band accompaniment to premiere at NFA in 2010. More recently, Sarah Jackson has commissioned an orchestra version, premiered at the 2014 NFA convention.By 2008, Sonatine de Giverny was being performed so frequently that I decided to write another piccolo piece as soon as an opportunity arose. The heroic pastoral Daphnis et Egl was performed only once, on 29 October 1753, for the entertainment of King Louis XV at Fontainebleau and remained unpublished until today. This edition is based on Rameau's autograph manuscript, a copy of the separate parts, and the libretto published by Ballard in 1753. A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau, whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement. This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version—which is actually more complete in its musical form, in particular with its overture and two ariettas—but also reconstructs the original state of the final divertissement (presented in the appendix) before it was revised.

Beethoven's autographs of the first three piano concertos opp. 15, 19 and 37 are the earliest of all orchestral scores which have survived integrally. Thanks to source studies, we know today that a first version of the Concerto in Bb major op. 19 had already originated in Bonn in 1790 at the latest. It was followed by a second version written in Vienna most likely in 1793 which included the Rondo in Bb major WoO 6 as finale. A third version followed most probably in 1794 and led to the fourth and final version, written in Prague in October 1798, as Beethoven sojourned there at the beginning of the concert season. (from the Preface)This autograph together with the autograph solo part which was made at the beginning of 1801 and the parts printed in the same year, are the main sources of the present edition.

The autograph manuscript bears evidence that the symphony was completed in October 1812, merely five months after the seventh one. It was first performed in a concert given of Beethoven's works in Vienna, on February 27, 1814. Although the musicians and the critics immediately recognized its exceptional values, the 8th symphony took longer to gain popularity than its predecessors. Schumann reported as late as 1840 that this magnificent work was undeservedly seldom performed in concerts. The score was printed parallel with the orchestral parts by S. A. Steiner of Vienna in 1816. Apart from some obvious printing errors which are not listed here the various editions do not show any significant deviations. There is only one ambiguous note we have to comment on: the final G of the first clarinet at the end of the middle section (bar 78) of the Menuetto movement. This apperars in contemporary parts either as a two-line or a three-line note. In the present edition both have been indicated, leaving it to the performer to decide which one to chooise.

Richard Strauss was aware (especially following the success of his Don Juan) of his reputation and above all of his value as a composer, which led him to rewrite several of his successful works by hand and leave them to his descendants as valuable Christmas gifts. In the case of the Eulenspiegel score, however, it was a genuine revision, which he marked with the instruction: [...] with the second fair copy October 1944 | once again revised and | to be regarded as a new print (especially in the complete edition of my works). | Dr. Richard Strauss. Hundreds of more precisely defined indications for articulation, dynamics and tempo, but especially an altered scoring at the end of the work (waiver of additional horns and trumpets) present the Till Eulenspiegel in this Urtext edition for the first time in the version bequeathed by Strauss as the final version. The dedicatee of the work changed as well. Whereas the first edition was dedicated to the dear friend Dr. Arthur Seidl, Strauss dedicated his revision to the good Till on his 50th birthday.
