More Folk Strings for String Quartet or String Orchestra

More Folk Strings is a collection of melodies from around the world, in a variety of moods and with rhythmic patterns and harmonies that are representative of their country of origin. Because of the flexible scoring used in More Folk Strings, players at a variety of levels can make music together and less experienced players can play the solo (melody) parts, which use little or no shifting and are in accessible keys. Some pieces in the collection are easier than others. The collection is available in a number of instrumentations for string quartet or string orchestra, for violin ensemble, viola ensemble, cello ensemble, for two, three, or four violin, viola or cello players in any combination of these instruments, and for solo violin, solo viola, and solo cello. The piano accompaniment may be used with any of the combinations. In More Folk Strings for String Quartet or String Orchestra, the melody is passed around so that all members of the ensemble can have the opportunity to play the tune. Score and parts are marked with melody and harmony to help players bring out the melody at the appropriate moment. Teachers' notes provide lyrics and background information on each folk song in addition to rehearsal and performance suggestions.

George Butterworth was born in London on July 12th 1885 to a well-to-do family. Eton School was followed by university at Trinity College Oxford where he met Vaughan Williams and Cecil Sharp. He taught for a while at Radley studied for a short time at the Royal College of Music then concentrated more or less full time on collecting folk songs sometimes with Vaughan Williams. When the First World War started in 1914 he joined the Durham Light Infantry as a Lieutenant. In the trenches he was mentioned in dispatches for outstanding courage and won the Military Cross. He led a successful raid on August 15th 1916 in the Battle of the Somme but during the raidButterworth was killed by a sniper's bullet.Much of his music is influenced by folk-song. The idyll 'Banks of Green Willow' is one of his best works and perfectly captures the nature of the English countryside. Agustin Pio Barrios Ferreyra, a Paraguayan composer and guitarist, is nowadays known as the creator of the Mangorean or Indo-American school of the Guitar. ?The name, Mangoré, was adopted in honor of the great chieftain Mangoré, an important personage of the Paraguayan jungles?.Mangoré used for his works popular folkloristic themes of South America as well as sounds of nature (?the still waters of [?] the Amazon?, ?the song of the birds?). But Magnoré also was inspired by European music: He composed gavottes, minuets and waltzes: ?It was in J.S.Bach where Barrios discovered the source of his universality [?]?.Admired by many but despised by more was his way of stringing his guitar: ?[?] the way he attacked the strings with the fingers sideward, with very little use of the fingernails?. He also invented some kind of a muffler: He put ?small balls of rubber on the Pirastro steel string?. Jesus Benites R. who collected Magnoré?s works for this edition says about him: ?Magnore is the genius of South America?. He was a strong influence for many composers and musicians, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Manuel Ponce and Andres Segovia. Vol. 1 of this 4 book collection contains 23 pieces, including Chôro da saudade, Danza Paraguaya, La Catedral and Madrigal (Gavota).

Book/Cd Set-This beginner’s approach to playing fingerstyle guitar uses well-known folk songs to develop left and right-hand techniques. The tunes are first introduced with simplified chords and accompaniment provided by an easydownward strum of the thumb. Next the thumb and three fingers pluck simultaneously to produce block chords and finally render more complex arpeggiated patterns. While barre chords are judiciously avoided throughout thealternating bass concept is presented with “full-strength” chords using all six strings where applicable. The work builds to quite a passionate climax before re-establishing the pastorale mood of the opening. The song on which the story is based has a tragic death at its centre which is reflected in the score.English composer and folksong collector George Butterworth who lived at the turn of the last century and lost his life in the First World War is known for his settings of selections of A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad and for an Orchestral rhapsody he composed on the same theme. As a Recorder of folksongs he was successful in noting more than threehundred mainly from Sussex. One of them The Banks of Green Willow is the basis for the idyll for Orchestra that has been adapted here for Piano.
