Joseph Haydn composa 21 trios à cordes pour deux violons et un violoncelle dont trois ont disparu. Rarement donnés en concert ces petits bijoux de la musique de chambre sont pleins de surprises et très plaisants à jouer. Les 18 trios conservés font l?objet de deux recueils élaborés sur la base de l?édition complète des ?uvres de Haydn également parue aux éditions Henle. Le second volume contient les trios Hob. V:15?21. Le commentaire critique donne de précieuses informations sur la genèse des trios ainsi que sur l?état des sources.

String Quartets Book VIII op. 64-The quartets were dedicated to the violinist Johann Tost who was the second principal violinist at the Esterházy court during the 1780s. His business sense led him to sell twelve quartets - opus 64 was probably amongst them - toa Parisian publisher. Whether Haydn approved of this is open to question - the dedication was however no longer present in the second imprint or the following ones. Our edition follows the Haydn Complete Edition and for thefirst time juxtaposes the quartet in E flat major and the two original trios.

Though not nearly as well-known as the 'London Trios ' these six delightful divertimentos are Haydn's first pieces of chamber music to expressly call for the flute. Straightforward and full of Haydn's esprit they are a treasuretrove for all lovers of music-making in the home. The stylistic variety of these cheerful pièces d'occasion surely reflects the fact that they are partly based on earlier models: Haydn's baryton trios as well as arias and otheritems from his opera 'Il mondo della luna' ('The World on the Moon').

Sonaten op. 1: Nr. 1 4 und 9 op. 3: Nr. 2 4 und 12. Very few works in music history have been associated with the phrase 'epoch-making' yet Arcangelo Corelli's Trio Sonatas are among them. In 1681 and 1685 with the composition of Sonate da chiesa Op. 1 and Sonate da camera Op. 2 Corelli laid the foundation for a genre which was to be the chamber music format for almost 100 years. It was only in 1781 that it was superseded by Joseph Haydn's String Quartets Op. 33 which were also highly significant to the era. From a historical point of view the String Quartet can be viewed as a 'child' of the trio sonata. As a result Wiener Urtext Edition have published a selection of 12 of a total of 48 trio sonatas due to the 300th anniversary of the composer's death. Volume 1 contains six sonatas of the Da Chiesa model Volume 2 six pieces of the Da Camera type. This new edition was based on original editions the first Italian reprints as well as the Rogers Amsterdam edition. In addition to parts for the melodic instruments the new edition also contains a Continuo score with realised easily playable Basso Continuo. This edition is perfectly suitable as an introduction into chamber music.
