This volume devised by Martin Weyer contains organ music of easy to medium technical difficulty for use at communion. The broad range of styles encompasses Johann Sebastian Bach and early Classical works through to the late Romantic period.

Eight Little Three-part Pieces. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the present short, three-voice pieces for cembalo. Minuet BWV 929 comes from the collection entitled Small Preludes and Fughettas and was probably written as teaching material. Johann Sebastian Bach’s three great cycles of suites belong to the fundamental canon of piano literature: the Partitas and the so-called English and French Suites. It is the French Suites that have long been by far the mostpopular and this was also the case at the time that they were written. However this also creates problems for an editor preparing an Urtext edition because a vast number of copies of them were made by Bach’s circle of pupils and these contain many presumably authentic variants. In this revised Henle Urtext edition Ullrich Scheideler explains the complicated source situation with exemplary clarity. He lists the more minor source variants in footnotes;where there are major differences both versions of individual movements are printed in full. Our opulent volume is rounded off with an appendix offering alternative and additional pieces. This Henle Urtext edition has beencompletely revised and also offers new fingerings. From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller Fischer Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture' which name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have come down to us due to the diligence of C.F.Penzel who was a student at the Thomasschule from 1751 and who made copies of Bach's MSS he found there. Thus neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in B minor recent criticism suggests that Bach'sidiomatic flute writing in this popular suite would even in 1737 or later have been considered fashionably up-to-date even in Paris. It has also been suggested that the suite could have been written expressly for Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin principal flautist of the Dresden Court Orchestra.
