2 Pieces Arranged for 5-String Banjo-The banjo shares many of the same sonic qualities as a harpsichord so although it's so closely associated with more homespun genres the instrument actually lends itself very well to classical music! The pieces in Bach for Banjo are in tablature only with chord symbols arranged at the beginning to intermediate level for five-string banjo players. As in classical guitar arrangements the melody and harmony are combined. Most pieces are on facing pages with no page turns required and beginners can pick through the selections at a slow pace. Die Notenbüchlein, die Johann Sebastian Bach für Mitglieder seiner Familie anlegte, sind für uns deshalb so wertvoll, weil sich hier Kunst und Leben spürbar durchdringen. Bach hat für seine zweite Frau Anna Magdalena zwei Notenbücher angelegt. Das erste 1722 ist nur fragmentarisch erhalten, das zweite entstand 1725. Von Bachs eigener Hand enthält das Notenbüchlein zu Beginn zwei große Partiten, die wohl als Widmungseintrag für seine Frau gedacht waren. Die Auswahl der übrigen Stücke stammt wahrscheinlich von Anna Magdalena selbst, deren Schrift im Notenbüchlein überwiegt. Aber auch kindlich Unbeholfenes ist zu sehen, so etwa in der Aria von der ?Tabakspfeife?, die die Handschrift des ältesten Sohnes von Anna Magdalena, Gottfried Heinrich Bach, zeigt. So ?führt uns das Klavierbüchlein mit seinem farbigen Nebeneinander von Ernst und Heiterkeit, von Zufall und tieferem Sinn lebendig in die Alltagswelt des Thomaskantors ein? (Georg von Dadelsen). Die farblich getreue Nachbildung macht das Notenbüchlein als Faksimile allen Liebhabern der Bachschen Musik zugänglich.

“A mendicant woman from the Haynstrasse aged 59 years Anna Magdalena née Wilckin widow of Mr. Johann Sebastian Bach cantor at the St. Thomas School” – thus reads the entry dated 29 February 1760 in the Leipzig 'Ratsleichenbuch” (City Register of Deaths) for a woman whose name has become known throughout the world thanks to the two music books put together for her by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach himself opened the book with two of the large Partitas subsequently published in the first part of the 'Clavierübung”; the rest of the contents was determined by Anna Magdalena. Bach married the young Anna Magdalena in 1721. For her 24th birthday Bach presented her with a beatuiful elaborate notebook. Over the years the notebook was filled with favourite selections of members of the Bach family many in Anna's handwriting. The simplicity and accessibility of the pieces do not undermine their melodic beauty or harmonic sophistication making them an excellent choice for the introduction of Baroque music to young musicians.
