With fingerings by Renate Kretschmar-Fischer. The popular work known today as the Italian Concerto was published as Part 2 of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Clavier-Ãœbung in 1735 together with the Overture in B minor (BWV 831). Publications of music were a rarity in those days and it stands to reason that Bach would select only pieces he found superior and representative. Originally written for a two-manual Harpsichord this music with its terrace dynamics alternating between Piano and Forte also reveals its full beauty when played on a modern piano with the soloist vying with an imaginary orchestral tutti. Thisedition presents the Urtext of the »New Bach Edition« at the cutting edge of Bach scholarship. The fingerings have been added by Renate Kretschmar-Fischer an internationally renowned pianist and teacher offering valuable suggestions for study and lessons. Rounding off this volume is an informative introduction discussing the work’s genesis source tradition as well as fingering on the modern Piano. Urtext edition without fingering available as BA5194.

Bach composed these suites early in life before any of the other suite sets such as the French suites. They portray a young Bach bursting with energy dexterity and ideas and rapt enthusiasm for the newest styles of the day - the Italian concertos of Vivaldi and the French harpsichord suites of D'Anglebert Daquin and Couperin. Melding these powerful forms with the already Italianate German fantasy or toccata Bach produced some of the world's first true virtuoso keyboard masterpieces. Little wonder that his contemporaries were dazzled. This Urtext edition edited by Alfred Durr provides you with a clear and accurate realisation of Bach's exciting English suites.

Piano

J. S. Bach's French Overture In B Minor BWV 831 was published along with the Italian Concerto as the second half of the Clavier-Übung II in 1735. This suite in B minor was originally scored fortwo-manual Harpsichord and is the longest Keyboard suite ever composed by Bach with eleven movements. An earlier version of this work exists in the key of C minor (BWV 831a); the work was transposed into B minorto complete the cycle of tonalities in Parts One and Two of the Clavier-Übung.The term overture refers to the fact that this suite starts with an overture movement replacing the allemande found in Bach's otherKeyboard suites. There are optional dance movements both before and after the Sarabande and another unusual aspect of this work is the inclusion of an extra movement after the Gigue. This is an 'echo' a piece meant to exploit theterraced loud and soft dynamics of the two-manual Harpsichord. Other movements also have dynamic indications (piano and forte) which are not often found in Keyboard suites of the Baroque period. This Henle Urtext Editiondoes not include fingering.

For the six concertos that make up the second part of the Op. 4 Locatelli prescribed eight parts: Violino Primo Secondo Alto è Violoncello Soli. Violino Primo Secondo Alto è Basso Ripieni. The use of such forces immediately reminds one of the Corellian concerto grosso to which Locatelli contributed also in his Op. 1 7 and 9. But though the instrumentation used in this set seems to feature a clear opposition between the concertino (with solo parts) and the ripieno (with parts that can be doubled) we here encounter a group of works that are very varied in form instrumentation and structure. Taken as a whole the concertos of the Op. 4 ideally exemplify thedevelopments of Italian Baroque instrumental music: they reveal the close kinship between the concerto grosso and the sonata (as in Concerto X); they also show the derivation of the solo concerto from the concerto grosso; and there are even hints of thematic development and tripartite structures. Also featured are dynamic markings and other performing indications that were rare for the period and show increasing attention to the precise definition of sonorities.

Complete Brandenburg Concertos-In 1721 Bach collated six concertos as a gift for the Margrave of Brandenburg. Having been composed over a long period they had little in common musically and were primarily intended as a job application. Bach received neitherthanks job nor payment from the venerable Margrave. They were given the title Brandenburg Concertos 150 years later by Bach's biographer Philipp Spitta. The concertos are of great historical importance because they weremuch influenced by Italian music and the work of Vivaldi: they managed to break away from the standard German Concerto Grosso form. Using many combinations of textures and solo instrumentalists they were obviously written forvirtuoso players. The concertos have achieved immense popularity and the fact that a recorded excerpt from the 2nd concerto was placed on the Voyager spacecraft is a tribute to their importance and popularity. Thesix Brandenburg Concertos are a pinnacle of musical invention and they underline Bach's position as one of the world's supreme musical geniuses.
