The main part of Supplement Volume 12 features the predecessor of the Grandes Études de Paganini, a series of six études written after Paganini between 1838 and 1840, and referred to by Liszt as transcendent performance (Études d'exécution transcendante d'apres Paganini). The series was inspired not only by the virtuoso violinist and composer's Caprices and Violin Concerto in B minor but also by Schumann's Paganini Études, which Liszt presumably encountered thanks to Clara Wieck at the beginning of 1838. The volume also includes the first and second solo piano versions of Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (1840 and 1841), which Liszt composed a number of times in several versions,as well as two Wagner transcriptions and the first versions of adaptations of two works by Russian composers. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Simultaneously with the Complete Edition volume in cloth-bound, its paperback for practical purposes is also published, the contents of which, except for the critical notes, is identical with the Complete Edition volume. The GRANDES ETUDES D´APRES PAGANINI are a series of six études for the piano written by Liszt. The pieces are based on the compositions of Niccolò Paganini for violin. Other pieces based on various other composers are also included in the volume. Adetailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Simultaneously withthis paperback for practical purposes, its cloth-bound Complete Edition volume is also published with the critical notes.

Of this series of twenty-four études planned by Liszt only twelve were actually written, but the contemporary printed editions of the completed pieces (in the hope of a continuation) appeared with the series title '24 grandes études'. By publishing these 12 concert studies it makes the earlier and technically more difficult version of the Transcendental Studies available for the first time since 1911 for study by performers and those engaged in music research. Contrary to the 1911 edition among the volumes of the first complete Liszt edition, NLE will publish also the text variants of some studies, an album leaf in F sharp major in facsimile and in transcription considered asthe 13th study planned by Liszt for the series, and the earlier versions of so-called Mazeppa and Ab irato studies. In the volume will be published the puzzling album leaf, the so-called 'Prélude omnitonique' and some similar album leaves, too.

In the continuing Supplement to EMB's Series I and Series II of the New Liszt Edition, Volume 12 presents earlier and/or alternate versions of works previously covered in the preceding Series. Perhaps no other event had the profound effect upon the young Liszt as his exposureto the artistry of Paganini, a master who brought his own instrument to new heights and new demands. Soon after, Liszt composed his own set of Bravourstudien, studies intended for superhuman pianists, later know as the Grandes Etudes de Paganini. This Supplement volume presents an excellent overview, multiple manuscript copies, and critical editions of earlier published versions (in the clothbound version). For advanced pianists.

The history of Liszt's intensely virtuosic and unwaveringly popular Transcendental Etudes dates back to his 12 Etudes composed around 1826. Liszt later reworked 11 pieces of this not-so-technically-diffic ult series into virtuoso concert etudes, and replaced one of the etudes with a new piece. This version was published in 1837 under the name Grandes études. However, Liszt reworked these 12 big etudes again: the final version of the series - in which, with two exceptions, the pieces were titled - was published in 1851 under the series title Études d exécution transcendante. Transcendental Etudes was the very first volume of the New Liszt Complete Critical Edition, and it wasfirst published in 1970 based on the previous editions of the work. This edition includes footnotes highlighting common performance difficulties as well as English and German forewords, facsimiles, and critical notes in English.

The third piece from Liszt's Grandes Études de Paganini presents an especially formidable technical challenge to performers. Based on the finale movement of Paganini's Violin Concerto in B minor, La campanella was dedicated to Clara Schumann. Liszt first had the opportunity to witness the famous violin virtuoso's playing at a concert in Paris in 1832, and it inspired the young Liszt to obsessively pursue his own music through practice and intensive study of literature and arts. As a result, Liszt composed his six transcendent études that made up the piano cycle Études d'exécution transcendante d'aprés Paganini for a time, Liszt himself was the only one capable ofperforming them. In addition to the final version of the third étude, the present edition includes its earlier version in the appendix. This publication contains not only musical scores of excellent quality, but also a detailed foreword in English and German as well as critical notes in English.
