Miniaturen fur Klavier is a collection of small piano pieces, each one to three minutes long and of varying difficulty. They can be played as a complete cycle, as individual pieces or as a selection in any combination. The titles of the pieces indicate content and techniques used, in part based on structural principles of the film. But the music is not reducible to it - far too often a wrong track is missing. Johannes Boris Borowski (* 1979) is an outstanding voice of new music. His interpreters include the ensemble intercontemporain, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Berlin. His works were conducted by Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Peter Eotvos, Pierre Boulez and Susanna Malkki.

This selection is intended to reveal a less-known aspect of the genius of Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century: as a master of piano miniatures. While his large-scale works written over many years show Liszt as a striving composer for whom the creative process was difficult, at the same time, hidden in the shadow of the monumental peaks, the 'moments musicaux' tend to capture him in the process of improvisation, at the moment when a compositional idea flashed into his mind and was first noted down. The miniatures that feature in our selection trace his creative path through six decades (1827-1885), from his youthful testing of his wings right up to his finalfarewell. The manuscript of any piece that did not later become part of a cycle or the starting-point for a larger-scale composition generally remained in the mists of obscurity as a treasured memento preserved by one of his pupils or admirers.

Poul Ruders' MONODRAMA, dedicated to percussion virtuoso Gert Sorensen and commissioned by The Danish Radio, was written in New York in the early winter 1988 and makes the centre as well as the middle of the tri-part opus called The Drama Trilogy. All three works employ the word Drama in their title, Drama in the original meaning of the word: event. No specified event, but a premonition or omen rather, that something is afoot, a free Drama-offer from which anyone may populate the stage of his private, inner theatre. The first piece of the series DRAMAPHONIA for piano and chamber ensemble was premiered in London in the spring of 1988 by Lontano and Poul Rosenbaum. This piece is emotionally and rhythmically unstable as opposed to MONODRAMA (single-event) which is modelled from the archetypal idea of obtaining accomplishment from nothingness. The 31 instruments of the orchestra (no flutes and no violins or violas) are more or less wrapped around the solo-part to become one with that and thus emerge as one, gigantic percussion instrument. The rhythmical patterns of the orchestral part more or less follow those of the percussionpart, a single-event also on the rhythmical level. After 20 minutes climbing toward the peak of rage, the composition casts its slough and is reborn into a chorale-like march and the struggle between totally depopulated sound-scapes and ferociously roaring sub-oceanic storms begin and the piece paces toward the abyss; rage becomes despondency, New Rage as opposed to New Age, the spineless worshipper of beauty without pain. The third instalment of the DRAMA TRILOGY, the cello concerto POLYDRAMA will be premiered in Stockholm May 1990.MONODRAMA lasts aprox. 32 minutes.Poul Ruders.

'In the Mandarin he finally breaks with the romantic tradition and also turns away from the artistic endeavours typical of the turn of the century. The pantomime refl ects for the fi rst time what Bartók had learnt from folk music, refined into a personal expression, an individual phraseology. He consciously settles a score with the ideology and the style of his youth.' György Kroó.
