This unique collection celebrates the contemporary fiddle music of northeast Ireland, much of it for the first time in print. Not surprisingly, given its location and long history of traditional music, the fiddle music of this region shares some characteristics with Scottish music, yet it has its own distinct style. For those who are not familiar with this ruggedly attractive part of Ireland, this book will introduce you to some of its music and musicians. The tunes presented here, collected by County Antrim fiddler, Rowan Leslie, have all been written relatively recently by local musicians. Each tune is offered in two versions?one with the barebones melody and suggested accompaniment chords, and a second with ornamentation, articulation and bowing details. All tune types from northeast Ireland are represented, including jigs and reels, polkas and hornpipes, marches, barn dances and waltzes, plus set dances and slow airs. Moreover, the biographical sketches and backstories provided for each composer and tune demonstrate how the land itself, along with personal experiences and relationships, influence the fiddle music of northeast Ireland.

Stephen Bulla strikes gold again with this accessible but jazzy Trombone section feature. There is plenty of rhythmic fun for everyone while the trombones get that important time out front. The old spiritual The Gospel Train lends itself beautifully to a swing-jazz treatment and if there's anyone who knows how to bring the jazz idiom to the concert band setting it's Stephen Bulla. If you prefer, two Trombone soloists can be featured while the rest of the section plays along on the Euphonium part. Your band will want to do this one again and again, and so will you, so Get On Board!

Commissione d by a consortium of 20 high school and university bands coordinated by Scott Hanna of the University of Texas at Austin, Downshifting is inspired by Welcher’s joy of bicycle riding. Welcher explains in the program note: When I decided to write a piece for band that was basically entertaining and uplifting, it made perfect sense to call it Downshifting... With three gears on the front sprocket and seven on the rear, it’s possible to keep one’s legs going at a constant speed (for me, q = 126) while the bike itself may be moving very slowly or very quickly. I determined to capitalize on this in writing Downshifting, which keeps the same mathematical inner pulse, ‘shifting’ (with a ratchet) as the terrain changes..One of the joys of life for me is riding my 21-speed bicycle. As a basically non-athletic person who nonetheless likes to stay in shape, I have found that riding my bike provides just the exercise I need. The workout is strenuous, but pleasant—and the infinite variety of scenery I pass keeps me alert and wide awake. When I decided to write a piece for band that was basically entertaining and uplifting, it made perfect sense to call it Downshifting. With three gears on the front sprocket and seven on the rear, it’s possible to keep ones legs going at a constant speed (for me, that’s 126 to the quarter note) while the bike itself may be moving very slowly or very quickly. I determined to capitalize on this in writing the music, which manages to keep the same mathematical inner pulse, “shifting” (with a ratchet) as the terrain changes. So Downshifting begins with that steady pulse, on a grid of eighth notes in 2/4 to propel the little vehicle forward. There’s a joyous little tune in our heads as we begin our ride. As the initial thrill of riding on the flat gives way to monotony, we stay in that pulse for the first minute or so of the ride. Then, as the first hill becomes visible, we shift the bike down: even though the eighths are equal, the pulse feels slower (and we’re now in 6/8 time). Ultimately the compound meter shifts again as the climb begins, and we’re now plodding doggedly up the hill. (The music reflects all of these changes, with subtitles such as “Working harder—Seeing the climb, ahead”, “Steady and committed…the climb begins!”, “Straining against the grade”, etc.).There are two hills, and two long climbs (but in different keys, reflecting the change in scenery). When at last the summit of the second hill is reached (“Flying, Over the Top”), we coast at last down the other side at breakneck speed. The initial joyous melody returns, but now in a spread-out coasting pulse. At the end of the ride, we slow to a stop—then take one last sprint (shifting five times in the process) in order to end on a biker’s high.Downshifting was commissioned by a consortium of fourteen high school and college bands, overseen by my longtime colleague at the University of Texas, Scott Hanna. The piece is dedicated to him (and to all bicycle enthusiasts).

In-ear monitors are becoming more and more ubiquitous every day and wireless hardware systems are coming down in price, opening the market to a wide range of users, some fairly sophisticated about audio and other not so knowledgeable. In the hands of a trained pro monitor mixer who understands the needs and limitations of IEM systems (and users) the need for an in-line brick wall protection limiter may not be so important. However, at any gig - at any level - stuff does happen, although hopefully less frequently as you get up the production food chain, but when a show is live, sometimes all bets are off. Examples of transient high-level audio glitches can include unexpected sound spikes that occur from microphone drops, audio feedback, incorrect volume settings, pulling the plug on a condenser mic when it's powered up and any other sound hazards that may occur during a performance. Unfortunately, when you're wearing a set of in-ears, you may be guaranteed an up-close and personal front row seat to that spike or sudden sound blast, which is anything but pleasant. And that's exactly what the Sound Guard from Ultimate Ears Pro is designed to protect from. With the UE Pro Sound Guard, artists receive protection from unexpected sound spikes that occur from microphone drops, audio feedback, incorrect volume settings and other sound hazards that may occur while performing or recording. So far, so good; but there's more going on here. Matching impedance of balanced armatures with multi-way crossovers can be complex and certain personal monitoring/mixing systems don't handle such IEM designs - from any manufacturer - very well. Beyond its protection duties, Sound Guard also functions as an audio buffer that provides variable impedance matching from the source device to your balanced armature IEM earpieces (such as the UE Pro line) for enhanced dynamic range and improved sound quality. And although Sound Guard is intended specifically for those UE Pro IEM's, it can function with any balanced armature design. Housed in a compact 2-by-2-inch plastic box that's about a half-inch thick, the Sound Guard definitely gets points for being compact. There are two 1/8-inch stereo TRS jacks (input and output) on either side of the unit, which connect in-line via an included 6-inch TRS patch cable to your IEM receiver (or hardwire personal mixer), with the output jack going to your earpieces. The Sound Guard box has a recessed on/off switch and two LED's to indicate power-on and batterycondition.

The title No people. comes from the surrealist Raymond Roussel. In 1932 he published a long poem called New Impressions of Africa. For this he commissioned 59 drawings to illustrate the text. The commission was given to the artist through a detective agency so he never knew who the commissioner was or saw the text he was supposed to illustrate. All he got was instructions for each drawing and he had to make the drawings accordingly. A typical instruction might beNocturnal landscape. Very starry sky with a thin crescent of moon. (No people.)orA rambler, arm raised and fingers outspread, dropping a pebble (still visible) down a well and seemingly straining to hear the sound of its splash. (No other people.)When Roussel put the drawings and text together, the ordinary everyday drawings took on a strangeness they might otherwise not have had if the artist had drawn with the text in front of him. It's the juxtaposition of both unknowns - text/drawings - that gives the final work its strange quality. Gerald Barry (2013).
